Alright boys, I need to pick your brains (again); a buddy of mine has this rifle, backstory is that some relative brought it back from Europe after WWII, he apparently found it hidden away in a barn, the country it was found in is not known but we believe that he was with the Canadian Army so we all know the route that they took across Europe.
This rifle is a little out of my normal scope as my knowledge and interest in European infantry weapons tends to only go back as far as WWI. It is clearly European (my instinct is whispering Austrian), Mauser action? Clearly proof marks from a monarchy, Appears to be stamped with the factory, is stamped 1876 (whether that is the model or manufacture year, I don’t know), Other than that………………?
So, My questions for you guys:
1) What is it?
2) Country of origin?
3) Manufacture year?
4) Caliber?
5) Because it appears to be manufactured before 1898, and depending on the caliber, is it a proscribed antique? (buddy doesn’t have a license)
6) Any thoughts on value?
7) Anything else anyone wants to add?
Thanks much,
Lupo

There was one more photo that I couldn't upload, it showed the right side of the chamber and showed 2 sets of stamps, each letter was ornate Gothic with a crown on the top; the first set is R.F.S. (each with a crown on top) and the second set is F.D.G.R.S (each with a crown on top).

Mauser 1871 Carbine ( Karabiner) in 11mm Mauser (cal .43 Mauser), made at Oestereichesche Waffenfabrik Gesellschaft ( Steyr) in 1876.
This rifle is an antique, so no PAL required.
The rifle seems to be in good condition, despite the lightly sanded stock. How is the bore?
Cheers

Thanks guys, that's pretty much how I was leaning. I don't know about the bore as I've never seen this rifle, just these photos.

Kar 71. Lay it next to a Mannlicher-Schoenauer carbine sometime, they are very similar.

It will likely have unit markings as well.

So does anyone have an opinion on value?
I've already gotten a couple of pm's from people asking if it is for sale but I don't even know what to tell buddy to ask for it. If it was an SMLE or N04Mk1 I could say but not this....

3 things are important to determine a value:

Condition, condition, condition.

How is the bore?
The wood was "worked over" already, the front swivel is missing, the rear sight is hard to make out from your pictures etc...
Could be $400 could be $1200.

Right. . . . I don't know if the numbers match or not and don't know about the bore either. The one picture that I couldn't upload shows the rear sight a little better, looks like a notch and probably a ramp. I'll see if I can get more photos but buddy is up here in the Arctic with me and the rifle will be at home in (I think ) ottowa, so unless his wife will take photos, it might have to wait until buddy goes south on his turn-around in 6 weeks.
