Need help with AR-15 info

Hello all,

I am interested in buying my first "black rifle". I am looking for something based on the AR-15. I would like to fire .223 rounds. From what I have seen there are a lot of manufacturers making this similar style of rifle (Norinco, Colt, S&W, etc...) What is the best way to go without simply paying for a name? Thanks in advance.
 
Tons of options out there.

If you can get hands on a few of them at your local range or gun store before you buy, then you'll get an idea of price vs features vs personal preference.

Everyone has their own thoughts on what would be best, but if everyone liked the same thing, there wouldn't be so many options. ;)
 
Farmboy's advice to get your hands on as many as possible is the best advice. In the mean time read, read, read everything you can. There are a lot of threads on CGN where this question has been asked and you can search for those and learn an awful lot.
Don't be afraid to PM people on CGN and ask them about why they chose what they did - it would seem that next to shooting, modifying, cleaning, and fondling we like talking about them too!
