Hey everyone. My local Canadian tire has a few RC K98s for sale and I need some help.

The rifles seem to be in ok condition as far as my research shows. But I am looking for some opinions, I have checked on the forum and seen what others have said to look for. I have some pictures included and if some of the members would lend me some of their expertise I would be very thankful.

Overall the gun seems like it has seen some heavy fighting. Lots of dings and scratches. The bolt seems a little wobbly, but I haven't held a pristine k98 to tell the difference I didn't take any pictures of the bore or barrel but seemed to be ok.

If anyone can help from the pictures identifying manufacture date etc and whether this could be a half decent shooter for the price (599) I would appreciate it.

Looks like a mismatched pieced together. If headspace is good I wouldn't pay any more than 450.00 for it, but then again I'm not looking for one.

bcd is the code for Gustloff Werke, the 4 denotes 1944 manufacture. As with all RC'S the only matching parts are barrel and receiver. All other parts are mismatched, the floorplate is WaA 135 which is Mauser Oberndorf starting in 1941. The price isn't that bad for these days.If you want a K98 and the bore is decent I would grab it.

Intersting. $599 is a decent price - cheaper than on the ones I've seen lately on the EE. If the bore is nice, it's would be a buy for me.

Thank you for your insight,
I know they tended to be mismatched, so it just the way it is. some of the eagles look ok, but most seem kinda washed a bit, not peen'd can't seem to see any swastika's anywhere on the rifle either. But who know if I pick it up and how well it cleans up.

My local canauk tire wants a grand for a RC, $600 is not too bad, might make a nice shooter, for grand I would expect alot more.

Sounds like a decent price for a shooter. The "wobbly" bolt is normal, all K98 Mauser bolts are like that. The nicks, gauges and scratches are also normal for a battlefiled pickup and just add character. From the pictures, it looks in decent condition. The locking screws are missing from the action screws which seems to be the case with many K98's these days and they may be hard to find. $750.00 is on the high end of what I would pay though.

Hi,
bcd is Gustloff the manufacturer.

Chrono8, the sloppy bolt is normal on all 98 Mausers. Some are even a bit loose when the bolt is locked forward.

The price on that rifle is fine at today's prices. Anyone looking for them cheaper, should be checking out garage sales. $600 is two years ago prices.

As for headspace, don't worry about it. I've honestly checked the headspace with field gauges on a couple of thousand of these rifles ans all were OK. Some were close to being on maximum but still acceptable IMHO.

Way to much hooplah about headspace IMHO. Especially if you aren't reloading. If you do reload, neck size only and the case will be fire formed exclusively to your rifle. It's a common practice.

As for "clean up well" ????????? Not sure what you mean as you don't elaborate.

Clean up any cosmoline still on the rifle, inside and out. DON'T SAND ANY OF IT. You might get away with a pad of .000000 steel wool, soaked with Wipe Out or a mild degreaser. Be careful with soap and water. Soaps such as Lemshine and a few others will actually clean to well, expanding the grain of the wood. If you do intend to use water/detergent, use a mild detergent.

After you've cleaned the stock give it a few coats of Boiled Linseed Oil, making sure each coat has time to dry properly between coats.

That RC has a really nice overall look about it and the price is decent
