Hey lads...

Im on vacation in Newfoundland right now. Was just down at my wife's grandparents, and her grandfather was showing me his two old hunting guns, saying he was having problems with them.

First off was an OLD p17 enfield, which he said he was having problems shooting. Said it wouldn't fire. I checked it out best I could, and couldn't see anything wrong. After coming back here and looking around on the net, I found that they are a 30-06 rifle. He was trying to shoot .303B with it!!! I didn't know anything about the P17 till just now... When he gets home I'll be sure to tell him!!!!

Secondly he has an old enfield... Doesn't look like my No 1 Mk 3's... Looks older. Bolt is a bit different as well. Anyways, I looked for the normal marks on the collar, and all there was was a bear's head, and some writing in a different language. It was sideways on the collar as well. This is his moose gun, and he says now the rounds impact all over the place. I pulled the bolt and checked the barrel, and yup.. rifling is gone. Too bad for such an old gun... He even has the canvas case for it the guy who brought it back from whatever war had it in. Anyways, I can't get pics here, and sorry for my crap description, but does anyone know what kind of gun that is??? The wood has been cut (by him!! ARG!!!) on both guns, but other then a good soaking with oil they seem to be pretty decent... Minus the rifling of course... I just wanted to ID that other enfield, cause it looked neat, and with those markings I'd like to find out where it came from.

Thanks!\

First off , it's a M1917, not a P17
Now thats not a bear's head, but rather a tiger.
The King of Siam attended Sandhurst, so he was a bit prejudiced in favour of the SMLE. The "Wild Tiger Corps" was composed of civil servants. 10,000 rifles were ordered.

For reference and to compare, check the article with 106 pic photo montage titled 1920 ShtLE (Short Lee-Enfield) Wild Tiger Corps No.1 MkIII* Riflehttp://www.milsurps.com/content.php?r=182-1920-ShtLE-Wild-Tiger-Corps-No.1-MkIII*-Rifle in the United Kingdom - Knowledge Libraryhttp://www.milsurps.com/content.php?r=120-united-kingdom

They only made 10,000 of these ...

The BSA serial number (in English) should be under the bolt arm ... ;)

Doug
