Need help with my marlin 60

I may be selling my marlin 60 to a buddy who wants to give it to his kid, so I figured I had better clean it, I was getting a couple of jams last time out.
I got it from wolverine sports second hand, and it looked like it had never been cleaned. Of course being a noob I used an online tutorial. All was well until this step;

The white plastic bit, (recoil buffer I am guessing) was busted in half, and the loose half was further broken into about 6 chunks. all covered in greasy powder crud. Is this an easy part to replace, and is it even a necessary part?
the lower half is still connected to the action.

this is very common too all of these guns mod 70/795 etc western gun parts will have the piece you need.if no luck i think i can dig one up at my local gunsmith

Yeah, thats a fairly common part to break,but easy to replace,had the same thing happien on my 990 .If you don't replace it I'd be worried about the bolt battering the reciver to death.
Just about any gun smith should have the part on hand,Marlin seem to use the same one in a lot of their .22 auto-loaders.
