Need help with old Dominion Crown black powder shotgun cartridges.

Need help from you knowledgeable cartridge collectors.

I recently picked up this box of old Dominion 12 gauge shotshells in a fire arms lot purchase. They are black powder, cardboard shells, have small primers and the load is CJ and the shot is BALL. What was this load used for? Similar to using a slug? And if anyone here can date this box, it would be appreciated.

Cool find, no idea about the date, but reminds me of the CIL and then Imperial shot shells and the smells associated with them.

that would be my guess, do you plan to shoot them? be careful with the box if you do, you will get some money even for the empty box, if you choose to sell it.

I have some smokeless 28 gauge pumpkin ball slugs.
They are crimped in the exact same method with that fibre wad visible in the front end.

And since smokeless powder had been available for nearly 40 years in 1935, I guess they were still producing these for people still using older shotguns?

On that web site, I found that that while the Dominion Cartridge co was founded in 1886 in Hawkesbury Quebec, the Crown black powder brand of shotgun cartridges was introduced in 1907 and produced at that plant. But also that only in 1927 did C.E.L. become C.I.L. So this box was produced sometime after that and there is no mention when the Crown line of ammunition was terminated. However, I would be surprised if they were still loading black powder by the 40's. http://www.cartridge-corner.com/dcco.htm
