Hi, I have been looking for a while for a plan/instruction/etc to build a log tower. Something similar to this picture:

but much smaller (2 story max) to build a tower hunting blind on a budget. (I have all the log i would ever want to cut on 200 acre, a quad and a good chain saw). I'm looking for a decend way to attach the log together.

Does anyone have a hint for me ?

I would much prefer to build the tower only from material found in the wood and no "processed" material.

I would start with 4 logs 6" min diameter that are the length of the tower height (15' maybe?) plus 3 feet. Mark where your legs will sit with stakes. Dig 4 holes about 3 feet deep to set legs in. Get lots of friends to help stand them up then notch uprights and attach them all in an X pattern with 2 members (lookin from above) to keep them straight(they should all be leaning toward the centre at the same angle). Then attach X patterns to each side connecting the upright supports. This will give you a basic stable structure to customize and build on. I'm a 3rd year engineering student just so you know lol

Thanks for the tips, but how would you suggest attaching the log ? (rope, rebar?, etc)

long 1/2 drill bit, 1/2 rebar, pound through one, half way into next, repeat every 2 feet for stacked logs or where ther connect in corners

I never worked with rebar I will check this more indepth. You mean like a dowel joint ?

If yes, then what kind of adhesive should be used (since rebar wont stay there on there own with movement..) ?

In fact, I was hoping someone would offer me a technique of ancestral rope building / nocking to attach the log :(

I only built one stand that used poles( telephone poles)that were sunk into the ground, the others(5 or 6) were made resting on the ground surface supported by guy wires .
I have built a few stands using squared timbers or laminated 2x6's and invariably used long 1/2 inch or larger bolts to fasten the cross members together.
Logs or poles ,I would definitely bolt them together.....less chance of them working loose .
Build two frames on the ground, stand them up facing each other about 15' apart(for a 15' high tower), and fasten them together to form a four-sided structure ,about 16' apart on the bottem , 8' apart at the top and about 15 ' high .

Arcaner, if you go to Photo and Video Gallery there is a picture of a "whack Shack" that I built a few years ago. It is on page one in "Keepa's Album".(I bumped it up for your convenience)
I built and erected it entirely by myself(my son and family were camping for two weeks that summer)
I hope this helps you a bit .

We built one like the lower picture a few weeks ago but we had some 6x6's laying around the camp. so we used them. I suppose some straight logs would be good too. If I build another from available wood in area I will try to use some surrounding White Cedar if possible.
