need help with restoring svt 40

Hi everyone I am new to CGN and I love it here!!.
My SVT has the typical refurb shelac all over it. It started to fall off, I can remove it easily with my finger nail. I was wondering if the SVT origanily had shelac appiled to it, or was it oil/hand rubbed finish like the m44 that I have. Both are Izhevsk rifles. I would like to oil hand rub finish the gun because shelac on rifles is just wrong!! but I wish to do the job right. thanks in advance. RF

Both would have originally been finished in the amber shellac.

The amber/orange shellac route is correct. Russia did not have time to oil finish 10 million plus stocks during the GPW.
