A friend recently sold me a whole bunch of stuff for reloading for trap and skeet and some of the components were new to me. I was hoping you guys who have been around the game for awhile could advise me on how to use some of them. There are about 5000 wads designated WAA12FI. They look like the WAA12SL 1 oz wad to me and that's how I am hoping to load them. There are 200 CIL No.4 BP primers and 200 Vihtavuori 30 primers that puzzle me too. As far as I can see Vihtavuori doesn't make shotshell primers anymore and I haven't found any info on 30 primers. I think the 20's are the hot ones and the 30's are a bit cooler than W209 primers, but I don't know. Can anyone help with load data for these primers or put me on track? Thank you for any help you can give. Fred

Hi Fred:
From what I remember the WAA12SL replaced the old WAA12F1 wad so yes they are interchangable. Just to confirm if you check the claybuster site their CB1100-12 clearly states it replaces the Win 12SL & F1. I am 95% you are fine there. On the primers I have no experience with either one listed. Sorry take care

Thanks for the tip 3macs1. I hadn't gone to the Claybuster site. CR sent me some loads for the CIL primers that I can duplicate too. Still nothing on Vihtavuori primers, but I'm trying to contact them to see what info I can get.

Need Help With Reloading Components

Hello Fred:

As I recall, CIL made their primers in 2 versions, the #4 and #4BP which stands for battery pocket. This is the little cup the primer sits in. The #4 came without the cup and was a bit cheaper.

I happen to also have a few CIL primers left and in my experience they are a bit under size in comparison to standard 209 type primers. As a result they are too loose to load safely at least in the Remington and Federal hulls I was using.

They do fit fine in old CIL hulls if you happen to have some of those.

I wonder by any chance were they the same size as the old #57 primers, they were just a bit smaller also than a 209 and could not be used in the later hulls. The old #57's were used in a lot of the early shotgun hulls especially remington. I still have some here for some old 16ga loads we do.

A while back I scored a couple flats of RXP shells. When I reloaded them I was concerned that the ejected primers were shorter than the W209s and Cheddite 209s that I was using. When I phoned the hodgdon help line, the fellow said they were OK.
I would try them for fit and if they go in snug and are not too short to ignite your powder, they should be OK.

Hi Fred...

The Winchester WAA12F1 was definitely the 1 oz. load wad of choice back in the 70's and 80's .... I loaded a ton of them with 452AA powder in old-style AA hulls... and continued to load them with SuperTarget till I ran out and switched-over to the newer
WAA12SL's. No meaningful difference with standard target loads.

I started out reloading in the late 60's with CIL #4 B & 4 BP primers with C-300 powder and later switched to Winchester primers and powders. I used the Winchester primers interchangeably with the CIL's, in CIL, Remington RXP and old-style Winchester AA hulls for target loads with no ill-effects.

Sorry, cant help with the Vihtavuori stuff.

Thank you all very much for your help. I've loaded a bunch of the WAA12F1 wads using loads for WAA12SL wad. Going to test them tomorrow. You never know, they might get me out of the doldrums I'm currently in. Just as long as the transition isn't too abrupt:D! I'm considering loading the CIL primers in some of my old AA hulls using a light load designed for W209 primers. I'm kind of caught here, because I hate to throw things out and I hate to leave them lying around too.
