Building a 6.5x55 Target rifle, need some suggestions for barrel selection. Been considering a Douglas, but not sure which twist to use? Any help greatly appreciated.

6.5X55 barrel twist

Hi there if you want to shoot the 140 or 142 sierras you should use a 1 in 8 twist. The original 6.5X55 swedish rifles had a twist of approx 1X7.75 they developed it. Sooo for long range and high B.C. bullets you need 1X8. Bill.

The swede is an excellent cartridge. 1:8 twist will work fine for the high BC target bullets.

I have a few Kriegers SS match in stock and some Shilens SS, and Lothar Walter #2100 Cro mo coming (should be around $300) for a blank - 26" length.

140 vld range Berger and Lapua bullets work well out of that twist...

Regards

Joe

Thanks for all the replies, I am well aware of the merits of the cartridge, I have been shooting the swede rifles for almost 20 years now. Figured it's about time to build a new rifle. Was considering the Tikka Varmit, no doubt that it's an excellent rifle, I'd just rather have wood furniture.

Would like to have more info if possible on the above mentioned barrels, Guess I'll have to do a little more research. I have had great success with pretty much all types of ammo and bullets, use everything from 95g vmax and up. The only thing that doesn't shoot well in any of my swede's is the 144g FMJ Factory PMC.

Also building a .308 at the same time, Remington 700 actions for both. Perhaps a deal on 2 barrels?
