You will be required to join a range or club to get one. The range has to give you a letter in most cases that you send to the CFO with the ATT application that you print off from the Canadian Firearms Program website. It usually takes a few weeks to get your first one, some provinces it might take a couple of months.

i was curious cause the range i was looking at requires a course at the range and 3 controlled shoots with a range officer. is this a normal practice or range specific for an ATT?
Yes, this is normal.
In Ontario your club will apply for an ATT for you once you become a member and pass their test and/or probationary requirements.

once complete is it ok to go to any range like i have read in some posts or is that a thing of the past and can only use it to go to that range only.
As of Jan 1st, you can transport your firearm to your home range with your LATT. If you need to transport it to a different range other than your home range, you are required to have an invitation handy should you be stopped and questioned.
The conditions will be written on your specific ATT when it is issued, you need to read yours carefully and comply with it. They have recently changed the wording of the ATT's issued in some provinces, so be sure you're following what yours says, not what someone elses says. You should also join the CSSA and help support their fighting of these new restrictions on the ATT's, it was arbitrarily added despite a flawless safety record by law abiding firearms owners.
