First up is a bag I bought in a Gothy store in Vancouver about 20 years ago when milsurp was flowing back and forth around the various shops downtown. I suspect it is milsurp but I really have no idea, it's a strange configuration and has no markings.

Second is one from my first Father in law after he passed away. He was a pathfinder in the PPCLI during the 50's and had access to some surplus stuff. I suspect it's British based on what I gave seen in war movies and documentaries. Other then names stencilled and written in no markings.

Any clues or info would be appreciated.

Cheers!

I would say the bottom one is a Pattern 51 web pack, based on the painted brass etc. but I could be wrong as it has been a while..

Bottom one is the Canadian 51 Pattern small pack. Standard issue in the 50's and 60's.

First thought for the top one is a strange sample of a German field pack, unfortunately some of the web straps look to be British/Canadian. The one button also looks to be German or Italian - Possibly!!!
It's also possible someone had it made to order because that's what he wanted.

Thanks for the info guys. :)

Based on the info I found this page...

http://mpmuseum.org/post51equipment.html

At the very bottom of the page is a picture of the pattern 51 pack. Hmmm I see it had shoulder straps.

Any idea for a source for these?

Local surplus store has a pallet-sized box of L- straps, I thing they used them well into the 80's . They attach
at the short straps on the top of yours, left and right straps are different. Probably most surplus store will have them. If you want I can get some for you.

they dont work as back packs very well unless you are wearing the matching belt and suspenders, the L straps hook onto the pouch/suspender holder to keep it from drooping down your back

Hey I think I actually have the belt...

So I just need the matching suspenders and the L straps, cool.

Silly me I sold a bino case and binos at the last gunshow. /facepalm

I'll see if our local stores have them but I'll let you know if they don't. Thank you kindly for the offer, that's awesome. :)

Btw any idea what if any waterproofing went on the green webbing?

Green paint, I've seen several of those bags and pieces of canvas webbing that had been painted. They used to issue that stuff to members in SDB (Service Detention Barracks - Army jail) and the inmates had to make the brass shine for inspections.

As an old wearer of the '51 pattern web, I was always somewhat amused to see the small packs being carried as a popular hippie purse thing in the 1960s/70s. They were often festooned with various peace and flower symbols, not a bad use for the old pack after all.

Ate those the Brace Attachments "cheaters" mention in the link?

i didnt see cheaters, they are shown next to a compass pouch and then above a pistol holster in your link, they are nearly identical (and interchangeable) with the P-37 officers brace attachments

edit:
yes, further down they are shown unattached as cheaters
