Hope this is in the right section
I read somewhere and can not remember where [curse the internet] about a large shipment of unmarked 8mm Mausers that were made for or shipped to Egypt.
I think I have the chance to buy one and would like some more info on them if anyone knows the story,
I was initially sure the rifle was a vz24 in appearance but on inspection the only stamping on it is a "6" under the straight bolt handle. The reciever is unmarked and does not appear to be ground.
I am only taking the buyers word that it is 8mm as it comes with 4 old boxes of same and he swears that is what it shoots. 8mm does fit in the mag and cycle.
Thanks for any info. sorry no pics rifle is 500km away at a friend of my Dad's

Going off the top of my head, and I could very well be wrong, but I believe it could be the Yugo model 48's that Marstar was selling awhile ago, not sure which version. I think Marstar has a bit if a history write up on all the various models on their website.

Sounds like a possible Yugo M48BO.

If you had a chance to view the rifle in person, does she look like this ?

Are you sure the bolt handle is of the straight design, if so the rifle would be much earlier than the post war production 8mm rifles. The post war Egyptians had a short receiver.

x2 on the Yugo M48BO

The M48BO has a stamped plate at the bottom of the receiver. It comes with all accessories from Marstar for $479.

Hmm, I missed that straight bolt handle part. She may be a scrubbed VZ-24 ?

Or very early M48 Yugo BO Mausers made with older model bolts.
Czechs traded their Mausers to Israel and Egiptians knew that very well i think.

Could be.

With that straight bolt handle in mind, she may be a refurbed VZ-24 that was sold as surplus. We don't know if she ended up in Egypt but it is a possibility.

Does she look close to this ?

Wow thanks for all the replies
Nabs the rifle pictured looks very similar.
The one I am looking at has been sporterized on the front end wood trimmed and no bayo mount sight protector or cleaning rod.
Old timer says he bought it in 195? from a barrel of rifles in the army/navy store in Edmonton.
Why would a vz24 be scrubbed and was 8mm a common caliber for them.

The Vzor 24 would be scrubbed because later on in their sales of their stocks of Mausers, the Czechs did not want their national crest on another nations arms, for political purposes mostly (selling to non communist supported states), hence the scrubbing of the receiver. They may have been scrubbed to show that that they were no longer property of Czechoslovakia, which might make the most sense...

They would also definitely be in 8mm Mauser. If she is sportered the way you describe, I would not pay more than $150 if she is in amazing condition otherwise... IMHO

Enjoy it! :)

Nabs could be correct on the VZ bieng scrubbed and not taking anything away from his knowledge. but if your elder friend purchased this rifle in the mid 50's I have some reserves on the manufacture now, if you could ask your friend for a bit more pertinent info it would help, have him look on the chamber for an large S and is the bolt a straight pull or as you stated a straight bolt handle with mauser action, reason is many of these old rifles that were sporterized went through significant changes and although 8X57 is the most common German cartridge 8X56R was also used, if you can get some info off the boxes of ammo it would also help.

Will P/U this rifle in the new year and post some pics after I strip it down and look for numbers. The ammo was in yellow Winchester boxes 8x57 but the rounds I handled were brass case fmj with a kind of silverish bullet.
Thanks
Dave

Be carefull on any old ammo, the box doesn't neccesarily say what the round is, if the ammo is annealed brass FMJ with a long pointed tip it may well be military ammo in a commercial box, Winchester also produced hunting rnds in silvertip but this tip will be shorter in length and made of aluminum, head stamp should say if it is winchester ammo.

look forward to the photos, Nabs may still be correct with the VZ call.
