Not a big fan of the "L" peep sight on my N04 M10 AIA, believe its calld a mark 2 sight. I want to ask for one in the EE but I need to know which type of rear sight is best(is there even different types?) and if it will easily drop into my AIA. (I understand it does)
Thanks for your help,

Liam

Any of the issue No. 4 sights would work. The Mk. I with click elevation adjustments would likely be a better choice. There are windage adjustable adapters which can be fitted to one of these. A Mk. III with elevation slide would be next best. The absolute best sight which would fit without alterations to the rifle would be a Parker Hale No. 4, which is a target sight. But you would likely have to pay $150 or so, if you could find one for sale. Because there is no ejector screw in the left sidewall, the PH 5C and AJP target sights could not be installed without fitting.

I put a Canadian Cmk3 stamped rear sight on my AIA No 4 mk 4 (drops right in). Beater tried installing a Mk I sight on his and found that the adjusting wheel hit the receiver and wouldn't allow the sight to drop right down, so it's probably not milled there for clearance. I had a pic of the sight on mine but must have deleted it. This sight is not as good as the milled Mk 1 sight of course, it's a wartime expedient but it's Canadian so I love it anyway...
Now, a couple of Rangers on here (Stevo?) said that the point of impact on a Cmk3 can be off between the battle sight and the movable long range slider when the sight is flipped up...

A problem with Mk. III sights can be broken elevation latches. If you look at the photo posted, you can spot the defective ones.

We've had multiple CMk3's with manufacturing defects in them. The centerline of the battle and peep sights have been off, both horizontally and vertically.

I prefer the MkI but the Mk3 is certainly better than the Mk2 "L-type" that the AIA comes with. My No4 Mk4 is scoped right now, so I can't try a MkI for fit at this time.

Polar Man,
With the scope rail installed, the front sight is nearly invisible. IMO, an either/or sighting proposition, not good for irons and scope at the same time.

Mr Tiriaq: I have a few CMk3 sights banging around. One of them(the one from my 49 LB) has the broken latch syndrome(I installed a good one last night). I have another one that has a bent body but a good latch. How does one remove that little pin at the top that stops the slider from coming off? I tried with pin punches and couldn't budge it. Long Branch probably used a 200 ton press to get em together eh??

I've managed to drive them out, but you're right, they were intended to be permanent. If the sight is scrap, and you want the slide, cut the sight to salvage the slide. If it comes to it, cut the pin, and replace it after the slide has been installed.

That's a thought, I could cut the pins in the middle with my Dremel, but if cut will they come out or still stay stuck in the sides? And, what do you replace them with? I wonder if there's a roll pin in that diameter?

I forget what I used for replacement stock. Cut out the middle part of the pin, file the ends flush, drive out the remaining stumps.

I suppose that since the slider doesn't move unless you push the lever...you could just put it on with no pin!...not quite milspec of course but it'd have the virtue of being easy! ;)

we have put a PH target site on one of these. it turned out great, Y2K on this site has one instaled aswell. didnt have to drill any holes ether. i have a pic somewhere, if i can find it ill post it.

Beater- wasn't it you that said the No I sight wheel hits the AIA receiver?

Here's your pics btw...

Gee, Cantom, you've got 3 little ol' MIII's there, bet you wouldnt miss one, would you?:D:D:D:D:D:D

They're like the three little bears' porridge- one of them is #####ed, one of them is screwed up, and one of them is just right....;)

How is that PH sight attached? One screw at the rear, and a bracket of some sort that hooks under the bridge at the front?
I notice that the two rifles have different pattern safeties. Interesting.

Beater said he made up a thin plate that went in under the bridge.
I can see that he's substituted a blued round head Brit or Canuck safety because the nose of the stock parkerized slipper shape LB clone safety hits the PH sight and partially applies the safety...I've had that issue myself several times. My RCMP target rifle had exactly that issue, the bolt was actually dragging on the safety, I had to change it out.
