I recently acquired a beautiful little 99 Savage carbine in 30-30 while on a deer hunt in Wierton Ont.last month. This rifle has a short barrel, saddle ring, english style stock and a metal buttplate that covers the butt then wraps over the top of the stock for an inch or two(looks real good). The serial# is 28.980.Now I have two questions. Was this rifle any kind of a special issue? and are the two small screws on top of the receiver behind the ejection port meant for a Lyman style peep?I've only had a chance to fire it three times, all three right in the bread basket at about ninety yards.Should be a fun gun. rebel01

Savage 1899 Model F date of manufacture 1903. Should have a small narrow forearm with a barrel band. I have a later model with the schnoble forearm (1914) in 30-30. Had 303 but sold it. Available in 303 sav, 30-30, 25-35, 32-40 and 38-55. The last 3 being the harder to find one's. I have never seen one with the barrel band and I think that it was omitted in 1905 (Murrays) but MD will know for sure if it should or shouldn't have a barrel band. The two holes will fit a lyman peep, marbles peep and a couple of receiver sights (lyman, redfield and williams) to name a few plus a couple of odd ball hard to find sights saturn boone scope etc

Won't have a barrel band, rip that page out of Murrays, it's completely wrong. The only SRC that came with a barrel band was the model 1895 and it also wore a 22" bbl instead of the regular 20". I only seen 2 of them. Thats what you get for stealing my thunder, now go sit in the corner and think about what you've done.;):D

Rebel, nice gun. 1899F's are hard to find in Winchester calibers, the 30-30 being the most common of the 4. found one just like it a couple weeks ago but it had been reblued so I passed. I used to have an SRC myself, also like Blairs in 303. Neat guns huh? Does yours have a regular rocky mountain rear sight or a windage adjustable one stamped Savage 21 on top? The SRC's were commonly found with Savage model 21B's on them.

Hey M.D.,Good to hear from you. This 99 has a Marbles semi buckhorn w/the white diamond on it,(Replaced at one time I guess). The front sight is a plain jane dovetail(small).I'm thinking of installing a lyman peep on the rear but I,m wondering if the front sight will be high enough?Got lots of snow on the island I hear,if you dont have enough I can send you down a ####load from Moonbeam..... reble01.

Ya, sounds like both the sights have been swapped out. The regular sights were 21B's on the rear and Rocky Mountain front sights.

I don't wanna see Moonbeam for quite awhile, been there, done that.

Hey, you see my little buddy Richard Gaudreault driving around in his big purple truck much up there?

I dont know the guy but I know the truck,I think its off the road now.Yeah I dont want see Mbeam either AND I LIVE HERE! Too much camossaflip for this boy.But I,m stuck for another five years or so till the mine where the wife works closes or she quits then its B.C. bound!

Hi,MadDog.Since we're talking about 1899 carbines,I have one ser.# 40.255 w/#255 stamped on the forend end and 40.255 on the buttstock end.It has a carbine butt, schnable forend, and saddle ring loop(no ring). It also has square rear of bolt,Redfield dovetail front sight, rear dovetail blank,Lyman tang sight. This should be an 1899F,bit on the front of the reciever is stamped "K".I know where there is another for sale for $350.00,in 30-30(same as mine).I'm debating that.Is mine a model K and is it desireable? NWMP

With 1899F's or anything 1899 condition is a big factor. Yours has all matching numbers so theres a plus. Alot of bubba's out there these days and nobody seems to bother asking if the numbers match anymore. ALL Savage 1899's are numbered, receiver, butt, buttplate and forearm. A Savage rifle without matching numbers is just a shooter. I think K&E used to sell repro saddle rings for the 1899F (both ring and staple) but last time I checked with them they were fresh out. The front sight has been swapped and the rear sight had a slot filler placed in it most likely because the guy was using the tang sight so the rear sight wasn't needed. $350.00 is a good price as long as it's got some condition to it. If you see a rat with no condition then it's just a rat, take it hunting. Most of the 1899F;s came standard with the Savage 21B rear sight. I've got a couple on reserve here waiting for the right gun to make correct again.

21B, always looking for more of them if anyone crosses paths with one.

Thanks for your prompt reply M.D. What about the letter "K" on the reciever? What front sight should it have? What other rear sight could it have? Is there a better reference aroud than the yellow Savage 99 book or the "Standard catalog of firearms" ?Does any one know where I could find a 30-30 99F lightweight or featherweight,Staight grip, made in the mid 1920's with a steel plated shotgun butt?Willing to trade or buy cash.NWMP
