Hey guys

I’ve recently started loading for my 30-30. My current hunting load is a 150gr Hornady interlock over IMR 4046.

I’m hoping to load some target ammo, for back at the camp. Something to shoot gongs with, while not making as much noise and using less powder.

I’m wondering if anyone has experience with loading subsonic 30-30 ammo, or where I might find information on this.

Thank you and best regards.

i reload subsonic 150 grains bullets with trail boss for 30 30 win.works fine and accurate but impacts much lower at 100yards ,when you compare to normal 150 loads .rainbow trajectory,

For plinking with my 30/30, which is a Win Model 94, I chose to go with the 110 grain Speer bullets - #1835 - and I just used the Start load from Speer #14 manual with AA 2230 and H4198 powder, because I have some of both. They both should be just under 2,000 fps, but not the subsonic that you are looking for. I never tried anything other than the two Start loads - so I can not say whether they are good, better or indifferent - they work fine for what I want them for.

Trail boss and pistol bullets are probably your best bet, but you might look into using Hodgdon info for 300 blackout subsonic loads as a starting place. You could try using 170 grain bullets and up to work with the lesser powder charge. I saw that H110, CFEBLK and Lil'gun are the more readily available powders that are commonly used with subsonics. Maybe Hodgdon or Alliant powder show trail boss loads?

I would use tite group and cast bullets it it was me. W231 would also work with the same weight charges but i find titegroup to burn cleaner and more evenly

You need less then 1140fps.

Id try to load to about 1050fps.

8gr in a 308 case with 165gr bullet gives 1100fps (published hodgdon load)

So id try like 5gr in a 30-30 case.

Ive used from 2gr to 10gr in a 303 british case with fps from 400 to 1400. Bullets weighing 90gr to 240gr

If your bullets are pointy, run them backwards. As subsonic wants weight in the front and super sonic wants weight in the back. They wont key hole as much

Good advice above. I use Red Dot, but Titegroup is a winner for subsonic and seems to be more readily available these days.

The only thing I'd suggest is that depending on the twist of your barrel, the real heavy bullets, e.g. 200+ grs might not stabilize well if you get much below 900 fps.

My plinking, fun load for 30-30 is 7.5 grains of Unique behind a 165 grain hard cast plain base bullet, sized to 309. No gas check. Super accurate at 25 yards and just plain fun to shoot. Zero leading issues with my micro groove barreled Marlin 336.

Has the usual 3 pages of blah blah blah and preamble. Then some absolute nonsense about cast bullets producing higher pressure than jacketed not understanding that the pressure for cast is reduced because the soft lead alloys fail at less pressure than copper.
But if you get past that there are some formulas from powder companies about how much you can reduce the charge of some common powders.

I agree with Andy.
My trials with 450 marlin. Where quite under 800 ft but key holes.
1050 to 1100 was the sweet spot. Little louder, but accurate.
As far as powders
Tite group with a filler , or trail boss was easy also..
Any pistol powder will do, you just might need filler to keep the charge close to the primer..
