Siamese Enfield

From The Lee Enfield Story (Skennerton)....

"Siam ordered 10,000 SMLE rifles from BSA complete with bayonets and slings in January 1920.......the inscription in Siamese (Thai) reads "Mark Rama VI BE 2462". BE 2462 indicates Buddhist era 2462 (AD 1919 on the European Calender).........The tiger is representative of the Wild Tiger Corps which the king founded in 1911 as a volunteer force largely composed of public servants and also included the royal bodyguard."

above info is good, of course.
Nice rifles, given that you can find one that actually has a bore.

Commercial BSA Smellie........ only other commercial contract for the Smellie was the contract for Iraq, filled partly in 1936, partly in 1938, this one for 22,000 rifles. Like the famed Siamese Smellies, the Iraqi rifles were marked, but are, it seems, even harder to find. Some of the Iraqi rifles were built with oversize Canadian Maple woodwork.

Now you have one-half of all the commercial Smellies ever built! May as well try for the complete set, eh?

Have fun!
