Picked up a nice Thompson Center Contender in 358X444. Does anyone have loading data for this cartridge? Any help would be appreciated. TIA.

I am presuming you may have an T/Contender "SSK" stamped barrel and its possibly stamped 358 JDJ..after the inventor J.D. Jones. 444marlin necked down to .358 if so ....

358 JDJ in 14" brl.

Maker of bullets is unspecified in this tested "Jones" data I received from his company 1985 for about 6 JDJ cartridges..includeing .358 JDJ below.

200 grain...

Imr 4198 41.0 grains max....2113 fps
H322.......45.5 grains max....1978
Imr4064...49.0 grains max....2002
H4895......45.5 grain max....1936

250 grain

748.........47.0 grains max......1861 fps
Imr4064...48.0 grains max......1956
H322....... 44.0 grains max......1920
H4895......46.0 grains max.......1939

.....if its' an SSK brl. it should read the caliber on the brl. if it was at one time purchased brand new from the company....or be appropriately stamped on the brl. on the flat surface where the hinge pin goes through it if a rechambered/ converted brl from Jones......as was mine ... a .44 mag barrel rechambered to .430 JDJ.

Rusty Chamber - weigh an empty fire formed case first. Then take the exact same case and fill it with water to the case mouth and weigh it again - water should be level not belled above or below. Then subtract the first result from the second and you will have the actual case capacity of water. With that info you can carefully compare and work up loads from published data for a cartridge of the same bore and close comparable capacity - like the 356Win or 358Win - adjusting for the larger or smaller case capacity, action strength and extraction power. Be careful and cautious working up loads.

I believe I have handled that gun you now own. Its previous owner showed it to me as he knew my interest in all things 35cal. We briefly discussed case capacity and case dimensions. The head diameter in front of the rim (nominally .470") is the exact same as the 358Win and 356Win. But I believe he remarked that the capacity was somewhat larger than the 358Win with less taper and a more forward shoulder - but that he was using 358Win dies - probably for seating bullets.

If the throat is long then seating out bullets is possible and is essentially the same as increasing case capacity too as far as internal ballistics go. The COAL is not limited by a mag length but the throat in a Contender.

Steves pages lists the 35-444 as distinct from 358JDJ though they are probably close -

Don't know much about that wildcat but would love to know how it performs when you get it shooting. What will you be using it for primarily?

358 x 444

hey there,I was the owner of that rifle.Work was done at EPPS.358 win reamer was used, chamber is longer than standard 358 win.Case capacity was around 62.4 grains of water.I took a cow moose and 2 deer with the 225 gr.Nosler Acubond. It was the most accurate and worked very well.
Check out Mike Bellm's web sight.
Rifle kicked at both ends.LOL
