As title says. im looking for reloading data, for the not made anymore, Hercules HIVEL#2 military powder? since i have quite a bit of the stuff!

i forget the reason it was no longer produced. I beleive it was due to the 15% of ______???______ in the powder that was hard on the barrel. i could be wrong all together

Thanks all for any input or information Will.

i just looked up the what i couldn't remember earlier in the thread start.
HiVel #2 was originally Military Rifle #19 a tubular powder containing 20% nitroglycerin, that was introduced in 1908 by DuPont and renamed HiVel#1. it was modified into HiVel #2 in 1915.
i ve searched all over the net for load data, but sadly no literature on HiVel. So i hope some members here CGN have a manual or 2 that may have some data.
I do know it was used by the US military for the 30-40 krag and 30-06, while some use with 250-3000 savage with civillians.

For which caliber(s)???

sorry Baribal, i guess i left that part out lol. Im only aware of three calibers that powder uses ie... 250-3000 savage 30-40 krag and 30/06. Im sure there is plenty more calibers the powder can be used with?

But maybe i shouldnt get a head of myself. is this HIVel #2 i imagine its considered an intermediate rifle cartridge stick powder, maybe you can confirm that for me Baribal?

cals. .30/06 , .308 win , .30-30 win , 35 rem , 250-3000 savage , .243 win , .223 rem. I am not even sure what all other cals this HiVel 2 can be used to load with? and even if all the cals i mentioned already can use this powder at all?? i have a good supply of this powder, just trying to find as much data or resources of data if possible? or if there is even any powder that has even close characteristics to HiVel #2? which i doubt there is another powder lilke this HiVel?

Maybe you could also confirm the reason i heard? Why this Hercules powder was discontinued, actually what i read to be due to barrel erosion?

thanks.

HBW85; I dug through my archived manuals and found an ancient Lyman manual that lists HiVel#2 with many chamberings.
Here is specs for the ones in your list.

30-06: 150 grain bullet: Start@ 45gr, Max@50gr; 165 grain bullet: Start@ 43gr, Max @47gr; 180 grain bullet: Start@40 gr, Max@ 45gr.

308 Win: 150 grain bullet: Start@37gr, Max@42gr; 165 grain bullet: Start@ 36gr, Max@40gr; 180 grain bullet: Start@35gr, Max@ 39gr.

30-30 Win: 150 grain bullet: Start@28gr, Max@ 32gr; 170 grain bullet: Start@26gr, Max@30gr.

35 Rem: 180 grain bullet: Start@33gr, Max@ 37gr; 200 grain bullet: Start@32gr, Max@ 36gr; 220 grain bullet: Start@30gr, Max@33gr.

250/3000: 60 grain bullet: Start@ 32gr, Max@ 36gr; 87 grain bullet: Start@ 30gr, Max@34gr; 100 grain bullet: Start@ 28gr, Max@ 32gr.

243 Win: 70 grain bullet: Start@ 36gr, Max@ 38gr; 80 grain bullet: Start@ 31gr, Max@ 36gr; 100 grain bullet: Start@ 29gr, Max@ 33gr.

No listing for the 223, but there is for the 222 Rem, 50 and 55 grain bullets. If you need these, I will give them to you as well, since they would be starting loads in the 223.
50 grain bullet: Max@ 23gr; 55 grain bullet: Max@ 22.5gr.

Hope this helps a bit. Cheers, Dave.

There's a lot of loads for HiVel #2 in Ackley's Handbook Vol. I & II
I can scan the pages, but it won't be before friday. So, send me your e-mail by PM and I'll forward you the files as .pdf
HiVel #2's equivalent (but NOT the same) is IMR 3031. A lot of older powders were discontinued because they involved dangerous operations. Also, these pre-WWII powders were designed to work with corrosive primers and the new lines worked better with newer powders. HV2 had a reputation for eroding barrel with high burning temp, but it also might have been because it was mainly used with corrosive primers...

Hello I am aware this post is 11 yrs old. I have several old manuals that have HIVEL #2 in them. If there is a specific load you are looking for, I may have it ? The reason I am responding is that I would like to know how you found the power for accuracy and consistency in velocity and pressure. I have some HIVEL#2 and are eager to try it in 358 Win and others.
Thanks. Lloyd.
