Need replacement Cooey .22 bolt. Do I have to headspace it?

I need a new (used) bolt for a cooey model 75 single shot .22. Can I just buy a used one and put it in my rifle or will the headspace be an issue?

How would I check the headspace and whats the maximum space I could have?

How do you headspace one of these bolts? Just work with the bolt handle engagement area or do you have to take the barrel off?

And finally, anybody know where to find a bolt? Already put a wtb ad up.

Headspace will always be an issue when replacing a bolt not factory fitted to a particular firearm.
Of all the Cooey bolts that I have swapped, I have had 2 that did not fit properly. One was too loose, the other too tight.
The proper way to check is with the correct gauge, but you can do it by chambering a round and closing the bolt (if possible). Push on the back end of the bolt handle root and see if there is any discernable movement forward. If there is, you may have too much room and the firing pin will not strike the rim with enough force or there will not be enough sealing of the case and you could get blowback and ruptured cases.
If there is too much play, you can build up the back end of the bolt handle root with metal, but it is imperative you strip the bolt first before applying heat.
If the bolt does not close, you might be able to remove some metal on the back end of the handle. Hit and miss.
 
Cooey bolts are fitted snug to the barrel... You should not be able to get a 2 thou feeler gauge behind the bolt handle on lock up...
 
You should, but it's not as big a deal with a .22 LR as it is with a cf. Pressures aren't even close to the same.
Chambering a round tells you absolutely nothing about headspace. Headspace is checked with headspace gauges and nothing else. Brownell's sells 'em. Or you can go directly to Clymer or Foster. There are rental places Stateside that aren't worried about getting their tools back despite the border too. Tools have no silly import/export problems.
Try Western Gunparts or Gunparts, Stateside. Gunparts will be significantly higher due to their $35US export fee. Cooey parts are listed under Winchester on their site.
 
if you in sw ontario there is a guy who sells them at the gun shows. $45 .ea His bolts are good quality. what you want is a bolt that fits tight. then lightly file the receiver until it closes tight. You dont want forward movement. If you do have it you might get some gas spray in your face. I have done few of these bolts.

They sell mags, small parts and ammo in bags. If he doesn't have a bolt in his case just ask.Look for Older couple Bigger guy with blonde wife always by the wall. Hope this helps.
