Hi I just got a Ruger 77 22-250 , and without starting a controversy over the Ruger vs anything other than Ruger . I am going to use it for coyotes and some time at the range , no competion just fun shoots . I was wondering does anyone one have any good suggestions for a scope . My price range is around 300 dollars . I won't have the long shots some have in the weastern side of Canada . I'm in N.B. and the shots may max out at 150 to 200 yards . Any help would be appreciated.

It would seem to me a bit of a shame to put a scope a 22.250 in such any way that could limit its usefulness at the long ranges where it excels. If I were setting up a 22.250 for my stomping grounds, I'd be in the same situation as you with most shots being expected in the same range. I'd be thinking of something that is versatile in the 50-150 yard range, but that will not be limiting when you get a chance to see what happens on a groundhog 300 yards away! A leupold rifleman or vx-1 4-12x40 would provide plenty of field of view at your typical ranges and a bit of power, clarity, and light to dial in on those rare but fun longer opportunities, without being too far out of your price range.

The Bushnell 3200's are good cheaper scope I have a new 4-12X on my older Ruger M77 tang safety 22-250 on my new Sako 85 Gray Wolf 22-250 I installed my older Leupold AO Vari-X 111 4.5 - 14X40mm with duplex reticle.

The best in between scope would be a Leupold VX11 4-12X40mm AO with the LR reticle which are 3 dots on the bottom post.

Most scopes in perfect conditions work very well it is the not perfect weather or low light that makes me lean to the slightly more expensive VX111 line of Leupold scopes.

I have had over the years (even last year) at dusk I spotted a coyote and when I looked at it thru the scope the scope is basically whited out from the light and I couldn't take the shot because I can't see this was with a Burris Mini 3-9 Ballistic Plex scope on my 223 Contender carbine.

Used Leupold, Burris, or new Elite 3200 3-9x40. I don't think you can get even a Rifleman NEW for $300 anymore...

something in a 4-12, 5-15, 4-16 or 6-18 would be my choice. A 3-9 is all you need for coyotes at those ranges but when paper punching more X's are always preferrable.

Dude. This may be a bad thing to say on CGN but I gotta tell you. A Bushnell Banner 3-9x50 or 40 will be perfect for your rifle. Banners are very good scopes for the $100-150 you spend on them. I have not had one fail or heard of one going bad. I've owned 3 over the years and also own a 3200 Elite (4-12 on a Ruger .22-250) and 12 power Leupold. I've shot ground hogs at 300 yards with a Banner at 9 power. ITs a great scope with good eye relief. You'll be amazed how clear it is for the price. Just stay away form the Tasco's. Google 'Bushnell Banner review' and see all the good stuff that comes up. Elites, Leupolds, Burris are excellent and technically better scopes too, but the Banner is all you need.

I agree with this comment except you will be dealing with lesser quality scopes if you go this way you will (not maybe) be dealing with the following.

Most scopes in perfect conditions work very well it is the not perfect weather or low light that makes me lean to the slightly more expensive VX111 line of Leupold scopes.

I use a Bushnell Legend 4-12x40 on my 223 rem for varmints its works great but i have to admit at the last bit of legal shooting time when its almost dark outside it is difficult to really get a good look at your target. I am very happy with the performance for the price.......Elite 4200 rule

VXII 6-18x40 is a very good scope for a 22-250, but they've really jumped in price. I have a VX III 4.5-14x40 on mine, but thats out of your price range. A burris fullfield II 4-14 would do nicely for a few less $$, you might even get to like the ballistic plex reticle that it comes with. Watch the EE for a nice used one.

Thanks fellas ,for the info . I'm going to take a look at all of the suggestions as well as the offers I have and I'm sure I will pick up something .I like the way you think Wookie316 , but I'm not sure its in my budget ha ha . Thanks guys.

I'm in NB as well. Over the yrs I've used 2x7s and 3x9s on my 22/250. I've never had the need for more in this part of the world. Basically, my '250 was rigged up like a deer rifle.

Scope selection should consider the type of hunting and the terrain you hunt in more than the cartridge.

.

I would look for a Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x40 for $240-260 new, $180 used

I have a Vx3 3.5-10x40 Boone & Crockett reticle on my 22-250, works well and I have shot it out to 590 yards, just need a bigger bullseye :D

I'm in NB too, and my .22-250 wears a vari-x111 3.5-10-40mm. I find the power range very usefull, although there are times when I've wished for more. Crows arn't very big targets in a clear cut. If I was in your shoes, w/ your budget, I think I'd look hard for a used Bushnell 4200 3-10 40mm. I havn't tried the 3200 4-12x, but that wpould probably work nicely too.

In NB also and i have a 4-12x40mm 3200 on my 300 wsm and it seems to work great....12X is nice if your gonna step out....If i ever sold the gun that scope would be going on my 250!

Well it looks like I found a 3200 in 4-12x 40 so from all the suggestions it looks like I 've got a good scope for 22-250 .......... Now what to do for my 308 ha ha .
