Looking to buy a scope with fairly high power for a rugar .338 win mag. I am interested and would prefer Leopold 4-12 x 50 although I would consider a 3x9x40. Anybody have any other suggestions ? I have used leopolds in the past and have been satisfied with the lenses. Any hints on a similar product ? how does bushnell elite 4200 or 3200 compare ? any info would be appreciated...Would consider quality used scope as well....
Thanks :shotgun:

I use a Bushnell 4200 2.5 - 10 x40 on my Sako .338. Great glass nice low power for quick shots and great field of view or crank it up for sight in or to take the long bomb. Rainguard is also a great feature, ALWAYS raining when I go for moose! You will not be disappointed. Keep your eyes open here on the EE, I have picked up two great deals on this scope.

Thanks for the info...Another question for someone...What exactly is the Rainguard feature offered by bushnell ? Is this an option that Leopold does not offer on their product line ? comparing two scopes in the approx same dollar amount what is the general consensus about value for dollar ? comparing the Leopold ( similar to model) to Bushnell 4200 with rainguard what is a better bang for your buck...no pun intended....I want a scope that will happy with for many years. Any suggestions or tips would be very appreciated.

Leupold Vari-x III is a fine scope, so is the 4200. I think the 4200 gives you the biggest bang for your buck. You may also want to check out Nikon and Burris, they have some nice scopes too.

All scopes will wear out eventually, but if you've got a Leupold, you'll be leaving a working scope in your will. A .338 makes it more likely that you'll want a scope with a lifetime warranty. A 4200 is the best bet if you're thinking 5 or 10 years, but if you're thinking 50, I think it's best to go with the Leupold.

Most guys don't like 50mm, and I'm one of them. 40 is plenty.

Ziess also has a lifetime warranty.

338 Mag? I had a Vari X III 2.5-8x36 on mine, I felt its the perfect scope for this particular cartridge.

A 3-9x40 VXII wouldnt be out of place though
