A while ago I started tearing down my K98k (maybe "tearing down" is a bad term, I was doing it very carefully.) On my rifle the foreward barrel band is on very snugly and the band spring is so gawddamned stiff that you need two people, a rubber mallet and dowell to get the band off. So I finally got the band off of the stock, but I've managed to wedge the spring underneath the metal noseguard that the band slides over. Now the rear band can't be removed because the spring is wedged in place.

To better illustrate what I'm talking about, consider this image:

The spring band has slid foreward, and it's front lip, up to the nipple that should go through the hole in the front band, is burried under the steel bayonet lug fixture. You can see how this wedges the rear band in place.

I was considering putting the rifle in the freezer for 15 minutes and trying to tap it with the dowell, but the nipple doesn't offer much purchase for the dowell, and I'm afraid the condensation from the freezer will rush the s**t out of the rifle if I can't get it apart to oil it properly.

Has anyone else managed to do this to their rifle? How do I get the spring to slip back down without having to go apes**t on the rifle with a hammer (which I won't do)?

Is your spring milled or stamped? if stamped, you can slide the rear band off over it with some effort and then remove the spring. If it's milled, you will have to carefully use the punch on the leading edge of the band retaining detent (or nipple as you call it). the brass punch won;t hurt it, the brass will give before steel will.

If that doesn't work, you'll have to drift out the pin holding the bayo lug on and then remove the band spring. Be CAREFUL putting the pin back in so you don;t chew the stock up and induce play in the bayo lug.

THose pictures are stolen from surplusrifle, that isn't actually my rifle, just a way of illustrating what I meant.

My spring is indeed milled, and the cleaning rod is out already.

I had that happen once. I had to tap the lower band down with a mallet to get it off. I found that debris in the spring chanel made the spring really tough do depress and a poorly fitted spring (length) caused it to get caught.
