I was hoping for some tips on a new rifle... I have a 22lr bolt rifle already and would like something centerfire with a bit more kick. I've looked at the SKS but thats not really what I'm after... That may be my 3rd gun though  .223 seems to fit fairly well but I'm pretty sure thats not big enough for deer... (or is it? I don't hunt but have friends that do so I may want to at some point)

Here is what I'm looking for...

Must haves
#1 Cheap new/used rifle... 300 or under (maybe a little higher if it really fits the bill)
#2 Relatively Cheap ammo
#3 fairly accurate as I'm mostly into shooting targets.
#4 scope mountable

Would like but not a deal breaker
-bolt or semi auto
-big enough for deer

Thanks!

I would suggest a .243 Winchester, in a Stevens 200. You can buy the rifle brand new for a little over $300. Then i would tell you to buy a loading kit, and roll your own ammo. Then it will be cheaper to shoot, and you could load bullets for deer, and bullets to do what a .223 can do. It has a little kick, a lot of boom, and is a great first rifle.

x2...with your descriptions of what you want, $ to spend, that would be your near only choice.

Great thanks for the info everyone... I think Stevens is the gun I'm looking for. I think I'll look around town to see what kind of deals I can get on ammo to make a final on the caliber..

Tradex should be paying me!

Don't discount the idea of a used rifle. Tradex has lots of used Mauser action rifles in suitable calibres (6.5X55 and 8X57) that would meeet your needs, especially the commercial rifles built by Husqvarna. Some are even listed complete with scopes.

I use my .22-250 for deer all the time 70gr speer on top of 33.5 of 4064, works everytime, .22 centerfire is legal for big game in NB

x2 you can get better quality firearms from trade-ex for the 300.00 dollar range than stevens.military surplus are tough guns:)
In Quebec your not allowed .223's for hunting big game and I don't beleive there is any place in Canada that will allow us to do so.
By the way, the sks is a good choice, you can find choate side mounts that will not lose zero allowing the firearm to be field stripped without tools, but you will have to drill and tap.
