I'm looking to purchase a 9mm pistol for target shooting and personal protection.
Looking at S&W M&P 9mm, Glock.

Which one would you recommend ? if you know of another manufacture please let me know.

Thank you

Yo da Glock be da best gun fa sho. Lots of bustas be frontin wit dey sig and MP but dey cant beat da glock. Don't listen to dem suckas. Strait up it be da most accurate and powerful 9mm gun.

I'd say go Glock 17 gen 3.5, M&P 9, or CZ75 9mm

I find all the other brands to be overpriced, overhyped, or just suck in general.

I have shot a lot out of all 3, and I wouldn't care which one I had so long as it's on that list.

Dirt McGrit, which generation of glock do you use? I'm with you on the sig comment, I think they're overpriced for what they are.

First of all, we can't use handguns for "personal protection" - dumb, I know, as they serve that purpose extremely well, but that's another story for another time.

Here's my suggestion, and why:

Polymer:
Ruger SR9 - cheap (under $500), accurate, reliable, ergonomic, and shoots well
Glock 17 (3rd gen) - I have nothing against 4th gen Glocks, but when given the opportunity to choose, I'd take the gen 3 Glocks anytime. Proven reliability, accurate, shoots well, LOTS of aftermarket support, and just works!

Steel:
IWI Jericho 941 - best factory trigger I've shot. Smooth as butter, shoots well, and cheap ($600). Excellent value
CZ 75B - similar design to the Jericho, accurate, very nice and ergonomic grips

H&K P2000....Excellent quaility. Durable. Very easy to take-down and clean. Comes with several different grip sizes to fit any hand. Easy to shoot. Talk to anyone that has one and I'm sure you'll get the same story. You should be able to fine a used one for around $800. You won't be disappointed.

Get real (steel) gun, that has no 'not so smart or needed' magazine safety and can be dryfired away without needing to rack its slide...

If you buy anything but a Walther P99 I'm going to kick you.

I hope you aren't talking about the Anti-Stress model. Weirdest trigger ever. I loved the look and feel of the gun until I shot it.

Back on topic:

If you can, find a place with rentals. I tried out a long list of 9mm's before I bought mine, they all have their merits. I bought a Glock 17 Gen 4; though I like the M&P9 as well. The Glock just came up at the right price first.

Here is what I find between the two you mentioned (if it helps)

Glock 17:
cheap and available parts, no magazine safety, good texture to grip (Gen 4 or RTF2), you can feel a distinct trigger reset.

M&P9:
Grip has more contour and backstraps change depth and width, nice cocking serrations, modern accessory rail, trigger is nice on the tip of your finger.

Both shoot just fine and I would have been happy with either.

The Sig 226 and CZ's feel good too, I just preferred the action of the striker fired glock/m&p/xd style trigger. Same pull from first to last shot, also why not save a few bucks. I was prepared to spend a lot more than the Glock cost but didn't need to. Also it depends on your usage, I think for IPSC the Glock, M&P or CZ Shadow (more expensive) would be sensible. It's what most people in the sport say.

YMMV

I just bought my first pistol as well and after trying a ton of them, went with the cz shadow. It feels great, shoots great, and is pretty solid.

Take a look at the STI 1911 9mm's. All metal frame and slide, maybe a bit more than you wanted to spend but amazing guns

IWI Jericho 941. The best kept secret in all steel 9mm pistols.

If you want the gangsta gun then go for the GLOCK, it's got no soul but it goes bang every time you pull da trigga.

Nothing wrong with the Glock 17 or the S&W M&P. I actually *do* prefer the ergonomics of the Springfield XDM better but they are more expensive.

I'd also check out the CZ SP-01 Phantom, it's a polymer version of the SP-01 Tactical.

I got an XD-m and love it. I can hit 2 inch groups at 15 yards. It has a match grade barrel and all that jazz. Great gun but they are pricey, and even with the smallest grip, its not suited to people with smaller hands. The SR-9 is as overlooked as the Jerico 941. Both are great guns and the price is right, the SR-9 is a little more complact if you have smaller hands. If you plan on shooting ALOT, you cant go wrong with the Glock or Jerico. The SR-9 has a bit of a wierd feel to the trigger but it gets nicer after about 500 rounds through it. Its priced right so if you dont plan on shooting alot then I'd go with that one. My two bits

It all comes down to what feels best in YOUR hand. I have a Gen 4 17 and love it. I have fired over 2000 rds and have had only one FTE. While owning a firearm strictly for protection is basically illegal in Canada I would use a striker fire action pistol for that purpose if I could.
Striker fire pistols are easier to deploy and simple in operation. If you add a 3.5 trigger assembly to the Glock from Glockmeister you will see a huge improvement in both accuracy and trigger feel.

Hmmm, no...

Glocks have NO safety at all, if the gun is hot and one pulls trigger - BOOM...

One can manually de-#### external hammer on a DA/SA gun like CZ with hot chamber and still pull trigger in DA to shoot. How do you de-#### a Glock?
Or apply (what) safety when it's got loaded chamber?

One can apply manual safety on a DA/SA gun (with manual safety like CZ) that is cocked, and then no matter how hard you pull its trigger in stress situation - it won't shoot. And if the gun has FPB (like some CZs) - be it manual safety or decocker - gun can be cocked, no safety, dropped onto hammer so even if hammer in turn drops onto firing pin - no fire, as long as one doesn't pull trigger at the same time. FPB will prevent firing pin moving forward.

For a SD gun, I'd say - decocker. This could be one very good reason SIGs are very popular with LE. I shot SIGs - they shoot very well, but the gun is unnatural to me, personally. Grip mostly... and high bore axes.

For me personally - it'd be CZ P-01, P-06, PCR or SP-01 Tact, depending on application.

For competitive 'production' shooting - CZ Shadow.

And I'm somewhat biased too :)
