Well first let me say I'm fairly new at this, 8 months in. I purchased a SU16 about 8 months ago and because I was impatient , I had a local gunsmith bore out the aluminum flash hider , apply heat and then slide it on over the barrel. Then he drilled 3 holes and applied set screws and lock tite. Any way , at the range ,yesterday, I fired off a shot with a laser bore sight still in the barrel, :( . Sucks but it is what it is. The flash hider has a hairline crack , so I removed it. I've found that one of the holes that the gunsmith drilled goes all the way through the barrel. My question is ,can I remove 11/2 inch from the barrel and somehow still make it NR. Any suggestions would be apprieated . And please, no scoldings, as I feel stupid enough and didn't want to ask for help, but know there are a lot of smart people on here. Thanks for any help... Brian :):)

Can you thread the muzzle and put a regular flash hider or muzzle brake on it?
Where is the hole in the barrel (Top, bottom or side)? It should still be safe to shoot without the cracked flash hider but the hole will vent gas pushing the muzzle the opposite direction.

Why would you go through the trouble and expense to do that just to knock an inch off the overall length? Not scolding, just don't understand why you would spend money on doing something with such a small return.

The only option I had was sending the rifle away and it would hae taken a couple months and about $300. I didn't want to do neither and was convinced this would work. Regarding why I want to do it now , is I think the integrity of the barrel is not right. So you think if I have it threaded, it would be fine even with the hole, which is on the top of the barrel.

I may have misunderstood your question, I don't want to cut the barrel unless I have no choice.

You can cut the barrel down as low as 18.5" (to qualify as barrel, it needs to be rifled portion, so not the flash hider). If you cut down the barrel any shorter, the gun becomes prohibited and NOT RESTRICTED. If it came from th factory with a barrel shorter than 18.5" it would be restricted but you CANNOT cut the barrel down below 18.5. Doing so makes it prohibited.

Ok I got that, I just thought I read somewhere that if you welded a flashhider on , it would count as barrel length . My only option would be ( as CR5 stated ) to tread the barrel and screw on a new flash hider. I hope this works, with there already being a hole there.

the pinning/welding of a flash hider to increase barrel length is a US thing...doesn't work here
