I'm very new to hunting and guns. I inherited a remington 270 from my dad but am looking for a good entry level shotgun that can be used for deer and turkey. A lot of the guys I have been talking to have suggested the remington 870. Anyone have any opinions or suggestions???

I decided on the 870 myself and did not regret one minute. I have the police magnum and it's spot on...plus it has a wide variety of upgrades available, go for it.

The Remington 870 Express is pretty entry-level and is a bargain for your purpose if you buy it with the two barrel set, a shot barrel and a rifled slug barrel. Definitely cheaper than buying an accessory barrel later.

But other brands offer the same sort of deal, including Mossberg. I have their 535 and like it better than the 870 Express with a slug barrel because I like the safety better (on top for your thumb instead of a button on the side of the trigger guard, too far to the rear to be convenient. Get to a gun shop if you can and handle a few different shotguns and you might find little things like that are much more to your liking on one gun than on another.

Bear in mind that these "entry level" guns can last a lifetime and may never give you an excuse to buy another shotgun.

There are more Remington fans than Mossberg it seems. Make sure you go to a gun store and handle them both. You can get an entry level Mossberg, (Maverick), for the price of a Remington barrel. For the price of a Remington 2 barrel combo, you can buy a Mossberg 3 barrel combo. So make sure you get hands on with each and make up your own mind. Both are good shotguns with long histories of putting meat on the table.

I've been shooting 870's for 30 yrs. Most versitile , easy to fix and get parts for. They don't rattle like the Mossy's do.

I've had a Remington 870 since the late 80s and shot tons of grouse with it...hunted with it every year! It's always gone bang, even when dirty, and is a bulletproof choice! The Express model that chambers 2.75 and 3" shells is inexpensive and an excellent shotgun.

870 or the Mossy 500 are both good choices. More or less equally reliable, lots of aftermarket stuff available for both as well. I just prefer the way a Remington handles. They seem to fit me well, not so much with the Mossberg for some reason.
