I need some advice and explanation, please. I've done a lot of shooting over the years - iron sights, telescopic sights and the odd laser sight. I've got a Marlin 336 I'm fond of, but my eyes are starting to have trouble with the iron sights. I was thinking of some sort of optical sight, but don't know anything about the newer types and don't want to limit myself to looking only at 1 or 1.5X scopes just because of that. Basic deer hunting at under 100 yards, mixed brush. Not into tacticool and don't want to drop major bucks on a sight for what is in reality not a precision rifle.

LPS, red dot, reflex and so forth - I've read the ads, looked here. Photos are ok and people laud this one or that, but I really don't understand what they all are, how they work, advantages and disadvantages, etc. Is there a website somebody could recommend explaining these things or could somebody explain it in short words, simple sentences? Recommendations before I have to trust the word of overworked salesmen on commission?

Thanks.

for your application, id say go with a 1-4 power scope, reflex, red dots, red dots w/ magnifiers are more of a black rifle sort of application, they will work, but not the best for what your wanting to do.. if your having trouble with seeing sights in low ligh situations, something with an illuminated retical might be a good option.

LPS- i assume you mean low power scope - just that a telescopic sight thats low power magnification , 1-4- 3-9 sort of thing

reflex , small laser dot that appears on a see threw lens - best for what it sounds like, shooting for relex type stuff - is ipsc

red dot - like a reflex, a laser shows up on transparent glass except a red dot is in a tube shape, put dot on target and shoot , works best on "hit is a hit" type of shooting, you can e fairly accurate with these but the dots tend to be 2-4 MOA and that can block quite a bit of what your trying to hit

this is the quick and dirty simple as simple gets answer, if you'd like more detail on something or specific questions answer, just post up and im sure they will get answered

Forget the battery operated nonsense.
Find a decent old 4X scope.
Weaver K4, Redfield, Leupold and such.
Good hundred yard optics and look swell on a Marlin.
