Does the No4 mag have a rib running all the way down on the back of the mag? or is that the No1 mag? I should know this but.... I don't.

to have a proper No.4 LB mag the rib should stop half way down and the rib should also be stamped LB or C broad arrow or Canadian arsenal depending on the year of your enfield. Also the mag follower should be marked CCF.

hope that helps!

marstar has some NOS savage marked mags still in wrap that would be appropriate for a longbranch, as most of the leftover savage parts went to longbranch

Wow thanks for the info guys. I've been around "tree o trees" all my life but never was too concerned about the mags. The guy I bought the LB from couldn't find the mag for it but put in a nice mag from his spares. It wasn't til I started reloading that I discovered the mag wouldn't latch properly and therefore wouldn't feed right either. Apparently it's a No1 mag withe rib that runs all the way down. Funny thing is it does have a 4 stamped into it front and back.

The "4" has nothing to do with the Number 4 rifle. It means that this was the fourth version of the Number 1 magazine. Another indication of the Nunber 1 magazine is the side ribs of the magazine itself. In the Number 1 Magazine, these indented ribs run all the way to the bottom, while in the Number 4 magazine, the ribs stop about 1/4 of an inch or so from the bottom.
