hey guys, so my charging handle snapped off today on my Kodiak wk180c, was curious if anyone has done the BRN 180 conversion for the handle? I do love my wk and figured this would happen sooner or later as its only measly vegan soy boy treads holding it into the bolt carrier. Any advice will be appreciated!! thanks yall

You could do something like this...

I could, plan to elaborate on what exactly you did? also, you should bring your sight back as far as possible on your rail, better sight radius, lol

Just a 3d printed handle with an m6 bolt through it... Which is pretty much what the specter charging handle is.

little bit too big for me, I wear chest rig and plates, but thanks for reply anyway, im more so curious if anyone has put a BRN180 conversion and knows if it will fit in the wk180c carrier.

Yes, just screw into bolt carrier. When you say the threads are the weak point I'm not clear on what you mean as my original handle hasn't failed yet. Do you mean the threads on the handle get stripped out? What is the mode of failure?

mine literally sheered off today during cycling, it snapped right at the neck of the handle where the treads start, so, being that this is my main carbine, im definitely looking to make the design better. I would encourage everyone who owns this rifle to do the same.

to be clear, half the charging handle staying inside the bolt carrier, other half flew put, in the thick of things, this is a catastrophic malfunction so the design in itself is very flawed. hence why I'm asking about the brn 180 charging handle conversion as that eliminates any treads and is a drop in solid piece and much much more durable

I agree, but, its non restricted and 5.56 and runs really well, its accurate and takes AR mags, so I'm happy with jt. just need to strengthen it on its weak points

Cheap Gun = Cheap parts

Not saying the gun is cheap but it was built to meet a price point.

I agree, but Owen who is the service manager has been awesome, warranties my carrier and bolt under recall and send me spare parts kit for free, and I bought the rifle second hand. I do agree and am pissed about the charging handle material seems made out of tin foil lol

By the sounds of it, the threads are strong if the handle snapped and left half still threaded in.

sure treads are strong, metal is weak , dude you are missing the point lol, it broke so discussing treads is useless when lots of people have had this issue,

That 'enhanced charging handle' looks like an 12 cent cap screw with a blob of polyethylene stuck on the end.

We have broken 3 charging handles so far on our WK180C's, but Kodiac was good about sending us some spares. I think the issue is they are too hard. I file tested them and the file skates right off, so they are probably 55-60c. I still have a couple spare ones. Will try tempering it back to about 45-50c and see how they hold up.

You would need to machine the threads out of the bolt and also machine a keyway for the anti rotation tab of the original style handle. converting to 180B style handle would be easier but then you are basically back to the original WK180 design where the handle eats the inside of the upper.

For a threaded in design to be reliable it needs to tighten onto a shoulder or conical interface on the charging handle and not bottom out in the hole, and it needs to stay tight. the lighter the better as reciprocating mass is not helpful.
