This is not my gun.

Customer brought in a Savage 11 in 270 WSM.

Bought the gun used, fired one box of Blue Box Federal through it without problem when he first bought it.

Then everytime he fires it he blows out primers and has a very hard time extracting the round. He's tried various weights and brands, all the same.

Below is a picture of the last bullet fired and the bolt face.

What could be going on. The head space seems fine according to our gunsmith. What else could be causing this issue?

Is it just me or does the bolt lugs look misaligned...

Guessing headspace issues caused by???

Press in barrel? Barrel moved a little? Handloads?

Is it weird that the ejector is not protruding with the bolt out?

I'm not that familiar with savages.

Possibly a different lot of ammo. Clean it and try a different type of ammo.

Winchester, Federal, and Remington ammo all does the same thing says the owner.

Headspace was checked and wasn't found to be the problem the first time it was brought in. But will be rechecked.

Only ever shot factory ammunition.

Looks stuck, but shouldn't cause any problems other then not ejecting the shell.

Yes it was working fine until the last shot went off and it got stuck.

What does the primer look like?
If it's gone, can you prime a case and fire it off, then check the
firing pin imprint on the primer?
I wonder if the firing pin is hitting hard and puncturing the primer?

The first 20 rounds didn't have any issues.

The next 20 rounds can can start to see where gasses escaped around the primers.

The 20 rounds after that all have their primers blown out and gone.

Well the fact the primer is completely gone would indicate that there is somehow space between the bolt face and the case head. How the case isn't being stretched and separated is beyond comprehension! The only other way for the primer to escape would be through the firing pin hole...but it doesnt look oversize...or no more oversize than normal savage.

Is it possible that the firing pin is being blown back and the primer is getting vaporized into the inside of the bolt?

Or the primer just fell out when the action was opened...

Blown primers and hard extraction indicate an overpressure issue.
Have you used a micrometer to measure casehead expansion?

I would suggest getting the rifle to a factory authorized service center.

Very heavily copper fouled bore, possibly. Raising pressures even with ordinary ammo
due to increased resistance. I would do a serious copper removal on that barrel
make sure it is clean, then try it again. Dave.

Yeah the primer falling out upon extraction would be an obvious sign of overpressure. And should have been included in the post...if thats whats happening.

That is what we originally thought as the barrel was very dirty when it arrived. So the gun smiths did a full cleaning of the gun and the barrel.

We were only told the primers were "blown out" by the owner of the gun.

Take it from someone who knows blown primers, the primers are falling out upon extraction, not vaporizing. There is an obstruction or serious copper fouling as Dave mentioned, either way the rifle is not safe and should be returned to Savage. This has nothing what so ever to do with headspace, it is obviously a pressure issue. Regular methods of barrel cleaning will not remove copper smearing, it needs to be de-coppered. Regardless any barrel that copper fouls so bad that it over pressures factory ammo is garbage and Savage should replace it.........Better yet just drop the whole rifle in a dumpster and buy a Remington or Winchester.........problem solved.

Did half the jacket of a cheap bullet stick some where in the cheap savage barrel and the next round weld it in there? There has to be something stuck in it to cause the pressure issues. Maybe the guy is shooting hot handloads with different head stamps and just saying they are different brands of ammo?

Maybe inquire if the bore was cleaned before firing the first 20 rounds, .....could have grease, oil, etc. as new, .....first few rounds made it through then crud built up. Clean the bore well, inspect and then try a round!
