Folks,

As the title says I need some help. I'm from the Mississauga area and I work with one of the local Air Cadet squadrons. Part of the program (part of our mandate) is to provide instruction and opportunity for them in safe handling, marksmanship etc. Back in my day (many moons ago) we used to train on the old Lee Enfield .22 conversion (usually a No 4 Mk1 relined etc for .22). Those days are pretty much gone - most units now have had to turn in their .22's. Today the program tries to promote the same sort of thing using Daisy air rifles. Advantage to that is it's supposed to be more portable - in theory a range could be "easily" set up provided there's enough space. Military provides the air rifles, supplies, backstops etc ...

Now to my problem. Pretty much all of the Mississauga based cadet units parade out of schools - no real home to call home. As recently as about 7 years ago we were able to set up and conduct range in the gymnasium of (some of) the schools. That's also now done - we're lucky that we can still use DP's for the honour guard / flag party. This is where I'm hoping for some help. We're looking for a space that we can use for air rifle range. We can't use a regular indoor range that's been active recently - DND prohibits cadets / cadet activities from using facilities like this because of higher levels of lead particles (no jokes please), dust etc in the air.

We have been able to pair up with smaller units out of town but the challenge is has been to get the cadets there (sometimes as much as an hour out of town) on a regular schedule. We're looking for a space - some space - in the Mississauga area where we could set up and conduct range training and practice. We need about 15 meters long (allowing for the firing lanes themselves, space for the cadets to shoot prone etc) and 1 meter wide for each cadet (so a 5 position range setup would be approx 5 meters wide, 15 long). We've considered warehouses, other businesses - tried some of the above with no luck. Our budget is limited but we can issue charitable receipts for value received. We have some really promising young people here just no place for them to train.

I'm looking for any suggestions / ideas / possibilities. I'm also posting this under the General Firearms Discussion forum ...

Any help would be appreciated.

Does Peel region have any bylaws regarding the discharge of air guns within its limits? I know in Brampton that air guns can't be sold, wondering if that is region wide and if there is any more to it. Best of luck finding a place to set up, I applaud the efforts of anyone who endeavors to teach our youth safe firearm handling.

Brampton now sells air guns in CT. So maybe the bylaws have been revamped on discharge in city limits..obviously <500fps.

I work sandalwood and main st in Brampton on 30 acres. And if I could allow land use I very much would.

There is also another farm just south of us..but given the horses there..also not likely :(

Maybe try some schools? Use of a football field for an afternoon?

this is something we could maybe look at in the spring ...

nope they won't allow in around or near. Another thought we had was maybe in the basement of an old church or something. I mentioned that in one of our staff meetings - got a few chuckles out of it - now I'm a small town guy - would have any (well wouldn't have most) of these problems in a small town. Here in the city ... hmmm

is there a Legion Br that would allow you the use of their hall. I was with 1129 Army in Haliburton for 15 yrs. Br 129 was our sponsor and we shot regularly in the main hall. Royal Canadian Legions are usually very supportive of the Canadian Cadet Movement. Good luck with your tasking.

We're working on that. Last answer was a resounding "no" but new year new people ...we're hoping

we trained with cadets/staff from 242 Squadron in Erin and that's exactly what they've been able to do - we're hoping ...
