Hey guys. So I got this older FN Herstal 270 from my Grandpa that passed away. I'm usually fairly good with reconizing guns, but not this one hah. I really don't no all that much about it. I see matching numbers on the barrel and reciecer, the number is 6973, not sure if that is the serial number(must be). Anyways I completely cleaned it and took it to my gunsmith and had leupold base mounts installed, then today I actually just installed a Burris Fullfield II 3-9x40 APG. Gun looks really good and I am really starting to enjoy it. Does anyone have an idea how much this thing would be worth? How is the accuuracy is on them? I heard the actions are quite amazing and lots of people use them for custom builds. Thanks!

The Camo Burris I already had around the house, I was not going out and dropping another $260 just for a black model. So I take it I should not have got it drilled and tapped? Can some one give me a story on these guns, I did not post this to get criticized, I just want some info please and thanks. What is it roughly worth? How is the quality?
 
It's still a good rifle, but it's worth about 40% less than it was before somebody took the Black & Decker to it.

Undrilled FNs are cherished classics, and quite sought after. Drilled ones are just another rifle. It's sad to see their numbers diminish even by one. It's sort of like turning a 1928 Rolls Royce into a pickup.

Value? To me, none. To others, perhaps $450 / $500 depending on condition. Last week? $900, perhaps more.

Don't feel bad, you're not the first. I recently saw an otherwise pristine Browning Safari Grade in .375 H&H where the guy had lopped 4" off the barrel with a chop saw.....to make it easier to carry on his quad.

If there's anything to be learned from this, it's to ask for help before altering a firearm. Very few alterations increase value, most diminish it.

Dammit! Well I wish I would have knew that before hand haha. Thank you for the info. I just wanted to put glass on it for deer hunting, open sights just didn't do it for me. Never knew it would decrease the value by that much. O well, live and learn I guess.
 
Rolls-Royce to a pick-up truck. Really?? Drama queen much. :)

D&t'ing a Rigby or an H&H for sure, but not this rifle.

It already has a scope friendly stock, bolt handle and safety(or so it appears). The OP simply took the next logical step to turn the rifle into a well set up hunting arm.

I can't really think of anything more useless than a .270 Win with only irons.

If the rear sight is the original , which it looks like, underneath will be the serial number.
Great rifles, walnut on these are usually pretty plain. Looks to have the left side Euro safety, but I can be wrong?

I have a similar rifle in 06, with DST'ers, put a vintage B&L 2-8 with Bueler adj bases to fit the time period.

Don't worry what it's worth, as I imagine you don't want to sell your Grampa's gun anyway. I have my Gramps gun, it will never leave the family, doesn't matter if its worth $600 or $2000 when it comes to good memories:)

Thanks guys. And there is absolutely no way in hell I would ever sell this gun! I was just interested to get some info and prices on it. But like Mauser98 said, I just wanted to make use of it instead of it sitting in my safe like it had been.
 
The solid left sidewall differentiates it clearly from the far more numerous military Mausers - regardless of chambering or scope. That is a strong action!

Yes, there are purists who don't like seeing someone else's gun drilled, and believe the value has dropped. But an open sight rifle is practically useless these days, and only the collectors are interested. How many of them are there, compared to shooters and hunters?
 
As far as value even it was not D&t it is still a $400-600 gun over all condition is not great . Sling swivel mounted 4" from the end of the stock that's very wrong . CONDTION is everything when it comes to values . Shooter grade guns are common .
