Hello to all! I've decided to buy a lever action chambered in 45/70 and I don't really know witch make? I seen a new marlin at the range but I heard that they don't function good, so looking through the web I came across the Rossi rio grande in 45/70, does anyone have any good or bad experience with this make? Thanks all replys are welcome!!! John

I owned a pre Remington Marlin 1895gbl that I sold to a friend and I replaced it with a Rio Grande, because it is a little lighter I prefer the Rossi the laminate stock on the Marlin was better as the Rossi stock is quite plain, never had a problem with either rifle I put X S sights on the Marlin and Skinner on the Rossi.
I think you would be further ahead with the 1895 over the Rossi... IMO the 1895 is a more solid gun... and when shooting .45/70 you do NOT want a light gun... the Henry is a very well made solid gun... and if you don't mind the direct tube feed as opposed to a receiver loading port, then the Henry is a good choice.
I have a newer marlin 1895 with 22" barrel.There has been no problems with it,very accurate at 100 yrds,and a lot of fun!

No problems with my Marlin either, and it is surprisingly accurate. I initially bought a GBL sight unseen and had to send it back (really ugly checkering, sights not straight). Have an SBL now and it's great. Just look it over carefully and you'll be good to go.
Were I you, I'd be looking for a new Winchester 86/Miroku, these are the finest 45-70s on the market and shoot very well. I cannot use the Marlins as my hands are too big and they bite my fingers even with light loads. I have several original 86s in 45-70 and 45-90 but if I wanted a saddle gun to kick around it would be the Win/Miroku for sure.
