Just picked up a Mauser and would like some help deciphering the markings. It is a sporter (wood only) I tried to take some pics but I am not used to my new camera so I apoligize in advance. I would like to return it to its full military glory if possible. On the barrel it says 89/39 and the proofmarks above that are a nazi eagle with a crown underneath, underneath that is a U. The barrel also has 3 nazi eagles with 280 underneath them and the barrel is marked 7.92 and Do with umlauts. The reciever matches the barrel, there is a serial number but it has been neatly struck out and a serial restruck to match the gun. There is what looks like a large X (or crossed swords maybe?) in front of the serial number and the reciever code is bnz. There is also a 4 right in front of the opening to the bolt. The bolt body, safety are serialed matching to the barrel and reciever. It has a winter stamped trigger guard but it does not match the rifle. The reciever is marked Mod 98 on it. I got it off a gentleman I work with who inherited it from his father. The bore is damn near immaculate, crisp rifling with a tiny bit of frosting in the grooves, and very very shiny. The barrel is 24" long and the hood has been removed from the front sight. No drilling tapping or other bubba work besides the monte carlo sporter stock. This spring I will buy some wood and whatever else I need and get her back in shape.

If anyone can tell me anything about the rifle I would be most grateful, such as date of manufacture and stuff like that.
