It's not all that long of a range but I usually just shoot pistol and black rifle's from 25 yards to 200 yards so it will be far for me.
Now I have an opportunity. I have to shoot a 12" target at 550 yards with only 3 bullets (.308WIN) in order to win a bet and get myself a sweet SAKO rifle with a nice 4-12 scope and mounts.

Who's rifle? The rifle will be a SAKO, with a 4-12x variable scope (probably Burris) provided by the person offering the bet.

Rests allowed? I believe so.

Can you preset up your scope for the shot? I asked that I get to sight it in so I can make sure there are no tricks. Not sure if I have to sight in a 200 and then calculate the drop from there but I assume I can sight in for 500.
Might be best to select a third party to sight it in, in order to keep the 3 round limit.

You know how to shoot, so just concentrate on the basics. Find your natural point of aim, breath for each shot then fire on your natural respiratory pause. Press the trigger without dragging wood, and follow through. Use a front and rear rest to your advantage if its allowed, otherwise use the sling if the rifle has one.

Things that might upset the apple cart are wind and mirage. If you can arrange to settle the bet early in the morning, before the breeze picks up and before mirage becomes an issue, that would work to your advantage. The key is that you have to hit the target on demand with the conditions at the moment, and often doing something on demand is more difficult than doing it under ideal conditions. I would not be inclined to have someone else zero the rifle unless you have the opportunity to verify the zero without using one of your three rounds. Try to find out before hand what his load is and work out come-ups required for a 550 yard zero. At the shot, get back on the scope as quickly as you can in an attempt to see the hit, if you can see the hit, you'll know how to hold for the final two shots.

I hope you take his rifle, anyone who makes such a reckless bet deserves to loose it.

Max is onto it.A good spotter could get you on target in three shots easily.Failing that zero the gun yourself at the exact spot if you can.Do you gvr to hit all 3 or only once?

I will be using Hornady Superformance Match ammo. I can have a spotter and I have to hit the target 1 out of 3 shots so it should be relatively easy I guess. I should be using a SAKO TRG-22 or maybe the Bavarian with the hair trigger. I will also be able to practice if I can arrange it, as the shoot is supposed to be end of August.
The bet is certainly in my favor as I have nothing to loose except pride. The bet was that the rifle could shoot it no problem out of the box but that I couldn't soo... I'm gonna have to prove a point with this one. I think he was a little surprised when I took on the bet, as he is used to dealing with people who only shoot once a year not once a week like I try to.

I'd take that bet in a heartbeat.

10 mins up from a 100yd zero with that ammo should have first round on a 12" plate.

Then put the other 2 on it just to add insult to injury....LOL
