Looking at picking up a walnut M14 stock from BOYDS, If I plan on having the stock bedded and properly fit... Why not buy the unfinished walnut stock Style 2 for 86$ and just stain the wood after im done ? Does this make sense ? I understand that ill have to do some cutting and fitting to make it all work. Or is it best to wait untill the finished stock goes onsale ?

I like your logic. Many M14 lovers are not comfortable scraping, sanding, oiling, finishing (lacquer, tung oil, KY Jelly ;) ) and all those procedures. Some might live in apartments/condos where ventilated workshop space does not exist (BTDThat). All depends on your present working conditions.

I've done both methods. Each approach was equally rewarding. And yes , you are correct when discussing the correct bedding technique. Life being perfect, I would rather glassbed/Devcon/MarineTex/JB Weld a barreled action into an UN-finished stock, the finish after all the bedding is secure, cleaned up, and all necessary contact points are solid. The oil on the wood will compromise the bond of the chosen resin and you will have to re-bed sometime down the road. On one hand, that's great bedding practice (I've done this before for shzzts and giggles). On the other hand it can be seen as a waste of time. :)

Hope this helps!

That's what I did & I am loving it. I used Old Master's American Walnut Satin with Tung Oil.
Damm she is a preaty beast. Plus most of all it has a certain "I made it" feeling to her. Except I got M14Doctor to bed her for me. I would try to attend one of Hungry's clinics to learn the proper way on how to do this.

The advantages you cite for buying an unfinished stock make sense. I've bought a finished boyd's m1a stock, and you have to work very carefully to not damage the finish as you remove wood to fit the chinese receiver. The chinese receiver will require you to carefully remove wood from the top of the stock to get the receiver to sit level. The right rail on the chinese receiver sticks down and require clearance be cut into the top of the finished wood.
