Hi, i'm buying my first serious hunting rifle at the end of the month, and am not sure what kind of scope i should put on it. I'd like the lowest setting to be no more than 3x, and the highest setting to be no more than about 10x. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Oh and the most i can spend is about 450 bucks. Thanks.

Now you've done it! You have opened the flood gates and everyone and there dog (gun dog that is) will offer you a different opinion. It is good that you are asking the questions before you buy.

Here is a few prices from Wholesale Sports on the more popular items you will get opinions on. Some others will post a few different scopes, but I think the majority will recommend one the the below models.

Bushnell Elite 4200 2.5 - 10x40 $489.95
Bushnell Elite 3200 3 - 9x40 $249.95
Leupold VXII 3 - 9x40 $449.95
Leupold VXI 3 - 9x40 $339.95
Leupold Rifleman 3 - 9x40 $289.95 Basically the same as the VXI

You would not go wrong with any of them. I have discovered the the optics on the Bushnell seems to be a smidge brighter and crisper, but the service you will receive from Leupold is TOP NOTCH compared to Bushnell! Look for other thread postings here and you will find lots of info.

Good Luck!

Actually, I don't think that many will "recommend the Rifleman". I just threw that one in there. It is optically the same scope as the VXI, but was originally made with different packaging and markings for Walmart. They didn't sell enough, so Leupold made them available to the general public.

Thanks for the suggestions, i've been looking at a bunch of different scopes that others have also suggested and i think i'm going to go with the leupold VXII 3-9x40mm with the wide duplex reticle in a silver finish. Thanks again for the suggestions.

Very good choice! That is the one that I will be getting as well. Unless of course if I come into some more money, then I will get the VXIII.

3-9X40 is a ver common magnification, they seem very multi purpose. If you find yourself in low light condition, consider a 50mm or 44, 45 whatever.
The elite series are very good scopes opstically, I have no seen very many leupolds but they seem excellent as well.
