Im hoping someone with some experience shooting the M14 to help me with picking out a scope. My budget is not big ($250ish) however a little over is doable. I've been checking out some scopes like the bushnell scopes, Nikon, zeiss (yikes) but I'm not sure which ones to go for.

I've been told there are scopes made for large calibre guns (.308 and higher) but the local gun shop only carries "5.56" scopes. Would this be indicated on the box? Or how do I go about checking which ones will hold zero? Also, I have no idea how far really is a 4x, 6x, 12x....etc. i think the local range is only 200yards so how much magnification is needed?

Thanks in advance

200yds isn't far, so get the idea of a high-mag optic out of your head. You really only need a 1x or irons to make good hits at that distance.

However if you want something a little more then what you need to figure out is how CLOSE you will want to engage. If that is shooting fast inside 50yds then you will find anything more than 2-3x on the bottom end gets difficult to use.

look at the Redfield line of scopes you can get a 2x7 power, 3x9 or even 4x12 power for your asking price. and they are owned by Leupold and carry a excellent lifetime warrenty.

I haven't used Vortex scopes yet but I hear they have a good product for the money and will fit into your budget, warrenty is good as well.

I made a lot of consistent hits on 12" steel plate at 340M with the M14 irons... That said I really enjoyed my bushnell 10x tactical on the M14 for paper punching... Very reliable optic on the M14

Be sure to bring a spotting scope over 10x to see the holes at 200 yds. At 100yd 10x is adequate.

I usually only shot my m305 with a Bushnell 2.5-10x at 50 and 100m at POCO.

A lot of guys, myself included, have run the bushnell 10x on their m14 with little or no issues. Works very good for punching paper.

The m14 has a reputation to be a scope killer.
get a good solid mount, good rings. spend a little more on your optics to be sure they don't fail.

Thanks for the input guys. Have a better idea regarding the power of scope I should look for. And Yeap I've been told the M14 is notorious for wrecking scopes on cheap mounts. I was thinking of getting the LaRue QD mount. But I'm open to other suggestions.
