Dear CGN-ers,

I would like to get back into shooting handguns.

I used to have a CZ75 clone in 9mm that was as accurate as throwing a stick at somebody. I know it wasn't just me, because other buddies tried it with similar results.

This gun really disappointed me and it had to go.

I would like to buy another handgun now and was thinking at either Ruger MKII or MKIII in .22LR, or 1911 based action in .45ACP. I don't know about 9mm anymore. I guess it depends of the gun also and the shooter.

I would like to get a decent gun, accurate, reliable and I don't really want to spend more than $1000.

Cheers

If it's just for plinking, see if you can find a used S&W Model 41. It's a very accurate .22lr It's a good American made reliable gun. Some have been known to be a little finnicky about what brand of ammo they like, but hey, your still shotting it while you're trying different boxes. Usually a low velocity target ammo
Since they are $1200 +/- new price, they tend not to be abused, as compared to some MkII's. Most guys used them for some form of Bullseye shooting. Used ones in good shape can be found in the $500-$600 range, withe the 5.5" barrel & 2 mags. There are a few around that will have the 7" barrel, or both.
Good luck.

For upto 1000 you can buy a nice pistol. I would go with either Glock 17 or Beretta 92FS in 9mm, both under 1000. Ammo is cheap to buy, around 10-12 dollars per 50. Also if you ever decide to try any tactical shooting you will have a good base to start.
I would also mention:
XD9
SP-01
P226 (Ellwood Epps has some refurbished for 849)
Tanfoglio Force 99 Sport (copy of CZ75), only 679

Like what was said above, for under a grand, you quite a bit of choice.
I would recomend the SA XD series in your caliber of choice. Also, Glock makes a fine, reliable pistol (if it fits your hand properly)

my 0.02

$1000 would buy you a brand new Ruger, a club membership, and a load of ammunition.
If you enjoy it, and decide to stay with it, you can always buy something else later.

Caliber has almost nothing to do with accuracy. Get another 9mm – cheaper to shoot than a .45 and more fun than a .22. Although a 1911 is also an excellent choice. For ~$1000 I would recommend HK USP or SIG P226 for 9mm and Colt 1991A1 for .45ACP.

TNT, if you could not shoot a CZ75 well, chance you have developed some problem with your shooting skills. you may want to try more guns before put money on the table, I guess the problem is always come from the shooter and the reloads, not the gun. Of course a good pistol will give you a lot fun and help instead heck of headage.

I believe that he said CZ 75 CLONE, my guess is a norinco. For about $1000 you could probably pick up a new/used Ruger .22 and a new/used 9mm.

Such as a new Ruger MkIII 22/45 for $310, and a Springfield XD-9 for $700. If you go used centerfire you could probably get almost anything you wanted. If you liked the feel of your CZ clone, you could get a new, real CZ-75 for around $600.

Absolutely get a good .22. The S&W 41, a used Walther GSP, IZH 35M, a High Standard,

For 1k I'd be looking at a Gunnar modded 'Rinco (in .38 super; but that's just me), and a Marvel .22 conversion. The best of both worlds.

Thank you for your suggestions so far.

I was thinking at getting a real CZ-75B. I understand they are fairly accurate and reliable too.

Also, does anybody have any thoughts about the CZ copies made by Norinco?

Thanks

You want a revolver.

Anything in .357magnum (more bang than any semi-auto cartridge) because you can also shoot .38 special which is almost as cheap as 9mm.

It's also super accurate guaranteed to satisfy the marksman in you ;)

I'd recommend the Ruger GP100 (inexpensive and well made).

Good luck!

I would say go for a CZ75...I have almost a 1000 rounds through my SP-01 and have had only 1 FTF.

You can get one for $790 shipped to your door so the price is reasonable as well.

If you have access to a gun shop with firing range go and try some out most larger centers have at least one range where you should be able to try out a variety of different cartridges and firearms?

Get a .22 (I have many but prefer the feel of the High Standard) and a S&W revolver that shoots 38 specials. Pick up a good K frame for $350 and reload your own ammo.

Load 4 rounds randomly then rotate and close the cylinder. Then shoot. If you have a flinch you will see it when the shot didn't go off. This is one of the best ways to learn not to develop a flinch.

I have an early CZ75 (short rails). It has a custom barrel and had a great trigger job. Quite accurate. My brother has a CZ75 with a painted rather than blued frame. Basic gun, accurate enough but not a "target" gun. Not many 9mm are built for accuracy. They are built to work under most conditions (no tight fitting parts).

One 9mm that did surprise me was the old P38. Can be very good. Some have crappy gritty triggers though but still can be very accurate. Just not cool enough to own unless you have many other guns first.

TNT, sorry for my mistake:p . A CZ is indeed a great choice, I have a 75B and eat everything that I feed, Have her over one year from now and never experienced any problem. The SP 01 is sweet evil look. The Norinco CZ 85 copy is also great choice.
