Need some Varget

I've stopped buying Hodgdon, IMR and Winchester powders anywhere but Higginsons in Ontario. Granted, you do have to buy quite a bit at a time to make the shipping costs worthwhile

Kind of off topic but...how does Varget compare to BenchMark?

edit to add...I just went to the Hodgdon website and see that BenchMark produces more FPS and pressure than Varget for the same loads.

53 GR. SIE HP 53 Varget .224" 2.200" 24.0 3026 38,400 CUP 27.0C 3389 47,900 CUP

53 GR. SIE HP 53 Benchmark .224" 2.200" 24.0 3102 39,900 CUP 26.0 3308 49,800 CUP

Benchmark, H322, H338 are good for lighter bullets because they are faster burning powders.
If your shooting heavier bullets for a particular caliber then you want a slower burning powder.
Performance is also a factor as opposed to sheer FPS. Just because a bullets traveling faster with one powder does not mean that it is going to be more accurate. Some calibers have a common sweet spot but every rifle varies as to the load it likes.

Varget is a great all around powder used in many Target loads from .223 up to .308 (and probably more) and is very temperature stable.

There was a long dry spell for Varget in Calgary...must have sold out pretty quickly. I tried Vihtavuori in my .22-250 when I couldn't get any Varget. Works great.

Is the Vit worth the near double price of Hodgdon, IMR, etc...? Did you notice a drastic difference from what your normal Varget load would have done?

Two weeks ago I was at the Higginson storefront. They had Varget come and go. The supplier couldn't ship in bulk, so Higginson received it in those big bottles. They broke it down further for small orders and were selling the empty jugs for $2 or $3 each.

just got back from Epp's in Orillia fellow bought 2 lbs I asked Wes the manager about Varget and he said he sells lots of it

benchmark is great it has smaller grains than Varget which i have found meter a bit better depending on what kind of powder measure you use

i still prefer varget for most things though

I like both Varget and Benchmark although I find Benchmark similar to IMR3031 (and I still have 4 pounds of 3031) so I don't use it much.
