Positive on the size? Reason I ask, is that most of the gun makers were not too shy about using odd ball sizes of threads that were not exactly to any particular standard. Lots of oddball decimal measurement diameters out there, and lots of really funky thread pitches, like Winchester using 36 & 1/2 TPI.
If you are positive, you are best off to order a tap and do it yourself.
A 40 threads per inch Number 10 diameter tap is not a commonly stocked item at most hardware stores, as it is finer than the National Standard Fine thread pitch. This makes it either a NEF or NS thread (Extra Fine, or Special, which is the catchall for all the ones that are not listed otherwise in the tables), under the working theory that the thread is a 60 degree National Thread Form.
Anyways, you can order special taps through pretty much any outfit that supplies tools to the Machine Shops or similar industries. A search should find you a couple nearby. I have had good results in my dealings with KBC Tools, Thomas Skinner and Sons, and a few others. There are custom tool grinding shops that will make a tap to order if they do not have them, too. Usually listed under the same suppliers lists that the tool sales places are if you are using a phone book or business directory. Search Machine tool cutter supplier, or custom cutter grinding, and shop around. Like as not, you will get a tap delivered for less than you will spend on postage to get a borrowed tap round trip.
