Hey Guys,

I have been hunting around for a new scope for my CZ455 Thumbhole Varmint. I had a cheap Tasco on it but recently sold it. I am looking to upgrade to something in and around the $200 range purely for target shooting. I am not an optics expert at all but have been trying to figure it all out so this is why I need some expert help, or mentoring if you will.

I have done various google searches and even a few forum searches looking for information but nothing I have found has really helped to answer my question as many people looking for a rimfire optic has a different overall usage than I do.

I would be target shooting at 25, 50, 100...and sometimes but rarely 200yds.

I have looked at the Vortex Diamondback 4x12-40 DBDC but have been told the parallax is hard to focus and can get blurry at 50yds.

I have also looked at the Hawke Varmint 4x16-44 SF which has had good reviews thus far.

Doing a lot of research I have found myself at a stalemate and cannot make a decision. So I am hoping CGNers who've helped me a lot in the past can help me again.

I am open to any scope so long as it is within my budget and fits my need.. Nikon, Tasco, Vortex, Burris, Simmons, etc.

If I should be looking for a different magnification than that list above I am open to that as well.

Any suggestions would be amazing.

Thanks

I guess the goodness of your eyes will let you know whether 9x is high enough.
I have a 6-18x40 AO Trophy on my CZ 452 American and think it's a nice fit.
Added a bit of weight to the rifle, but for target purposes, who really cares?

+1 on the mueller. I have the apv, and I'm liking it so much I'm thinking about getting the apt as well!
Great optics for the money! Also have the hawke varmint sf in 2.5-10x44 also a good scope for the money.
But for the same price I'd prefer the mueller. It seems a little better quality to me.

I cannot find much on the Mueller, but I keep hearing its a good scope. I am reading up on every scope recommended in this thread so far. Can you tell me a place where I can buy a Mueller APV ?

So far after reading/watching a number of reviews I have increased my potential choices (in no particular order)

1) Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 BDC150
2) Vortex Diamondback 4-12x40 Deadhold BDC
3) Mueller APT 4-14x40 (Put this over the APV because of the mil-dot ridicule.
4) Hawke Varmint SF 4-16x44

Mueller is a relative unknown to me but every review I read paints these optics in a great light (Great glass, holds zero, great knobs..etc)..an AO Scope for about $250 is pretty decent. Its a shame there aren't more companies in Canada that carry these optics because everywhere in the US these are going for 160ish which is a big price difference.

The one thing I don't like about the Nikon is the 50yrd fixed parallax, most of my shooting will be between 25 and 100yrds so this may not be a problem and it is priced around $210 in the places I have looked (Newer model with the popped zero knobs)

The Vortex is solid from what I have read but haven't read much about the Diamondback on rimfires, even Vortex calls it a shotgun scope. Cannot beat the warranty, and the price is a bit less than the Mueller. I have heard of the Crossfire on rimfires but have also read that the build quality on these Crossfire optics are a bit mediocre so I would like to stay away from them.

The Hawke is interesting and seems like the underdog in this one. At $219 its a bit expensive when compared to the quality of the others listed above but seems to come with some pretty good reviews. The side focus is definitely a plus and the half mil dot ridicule could be helpful. All reviews I could find come from Airgun shooters, and that is hard to get a good idea of what this optic is really capable of.

Just like when I was helped by CGNers with my first pistol and my bolt action 22LR, there will never be a firm consensus. At least when I chose them I already had a good idea of what I wanted..in this case I am treading in new territory so I am at a loss. Pardon my pun but I am having a hard time pulling the trigger..

I originally started with the scope on the BL on the CZ and didn't like the way I was grouping.
I sold my Mauser 98 6.5x55 and put the scope that was on it on the CZ.
Me happy now......: D
That Scoprion scope was a nicer fit on the BL.
I found the cross hairs a tad fat for nice tight groups.
The y'un'uns had no problems kicking my butt with that scope.

You can't compare price with the Nikon, go with a 4 power to 12 or 16 to be fair or price the others in the 3-9's.

I had the Vortex Crossfire 6-18 on one of my CZ's and it is a great scope but the crosshairs are to thick for fine paperwork, would be great for hunting or plinking. I also have a 6-18x50 Bushnell XLT and again the crosshairs are a little on the heavy side although my wife does well with it.
If you are looking for a optic for punching paper look at the specs on crosshair thickness as it does matter for fine work. I am slowly changing some of my paper shooters to the fine crosshair's.

Just something you might want to look at or consider.

A fine crosshair is important but from what I have found it is not something that most manufacturers, and definitely retailers openly display in a way that is easy to find. Unfortunately optics are not as plentiful as rifles in that I cannot go to a store and try them unless I want a Bushnell, a Leupold, or a Tasco for example.

Mueller I have to go strictly off reviews, as I would with the Hawke. Because there are so few vendors that carry these optics in Canada.

Nikon I have looked at and I like..but Sail is the closest vendor that sells Nikon and their stock selection sucks. The have Monarchs and Prostaffs in Nikoplex but it isn't what I want. The Vortex I can check out when I find time as there is a vendor about 20 minutes from my place, they are great guys I have bought a lot from them before and they highly recommend the Vortex line.

Nikon Buckmasters 6-18x40. Side focus down to 50yds, Nikon quality, target AND hunting turrets included, as well as a sunshade. Its the whole package at a decent price of $439 More money but you'll only buy once. Well worth it.

That is quite a but out of my price range, I am putting together a LR rifle later in the year and that could be a contender for that rifle but for a 22LR I want to stay in the $200ish range.

I am in the same situation as I have to drive at least 1:15 to get to the closets dealer so order all my stuff online and unseen. The internet is your friend, just ask the great guys here or other forums annd I don't think they will lead you astray! I am using the 8-32x44TD and it is great but a little out if your price range.
I also have a 6-24x44 Mildot Tasco, the one that comes with the free bags and it is a great scope for target shooting with a rimfire. You don't always have to pay $300+ for a decent rimfire scope.
