I've looked at my pistols and realized I really need a superstar on that team, so to speak. As far as service(combat) pistols go I have a P89DC in great shape, and a 1945 GI 1911A1 parts gun with an Ithaca frame and a civvie Colt slide on it. Also in great shape, but occasionally stove-pipes or fails to go into battery. I have several mags for both guns, and I know the P89 will go bang when I want it to, but I'd really like to upgrade my .45 leadthrower. I'm not looking for a race-gun of course. I'd like a .45 I could stake my life on if need be. Sell the GI and buy a Norinco to kit out? Sell it and wait for a deal on an used SA Operator or a Kimber/Para/SW? Get a Sig 220? Glock 21? That new Ruger with a rail? A manual safety of some kind would be preferrred, but not required. Any input is much appreciated.
BTW, I enjoy shooting my 1911, and would not hesitate to get another, but I'm open to reliable DA/SA autos as well.
Thanks

Ever considered a P944 in 40 smith? got one and just love it. Also got a norinco 1911 in 45. and i must admit that the choice is hard between the 2 of them whn i go to the range.

best combat pistol

My view is the Sig 220 is the best if it can fit into your hand it is a big gun.History has shown the 45 to be the best all around self defense round the US military is now thinking about switching back to it as the 9mm keeps failing in combat.I have always been a fan of the 1911 I see it as the ford of handguns out of the box it's not that good spend some time and money to fix it up then it seems to be ok.I think the best factory 45s are made by S&W.If you got 3 grand pick up a wilson combat 45 I personally couldn't jusify the expense as I feel my smith is just as good. But for general issue I'd choose a sig 226 in 40cal that's likely to fit most guys hands.Sigs are used by special forces the world over for a reason.

After careful consideration, and high hopes for PM SHhhh to kill our mag laws, I'm going to look at a USP. Hell, a .45 Tactical just sold last week here for $850! Pocket-change! No need to end the discussion though..
