Im going to list some parameters and wondering if someone could list a scope based upon them.

$300 Range
Side Adjustment AO Preferred but Front is ok
3-9 magnification (or more if possible)

Is there anything like this even available? I know the falcon's are $420 but after adding HST and shipping that just brings it up to about $500 a scope and thus out of my current optical budget :p

I'm looking at spending about $400 max with HST and shipping.

is front mounted AO a deal killer?

on a 3-9 or 4-12 x40, the front AO would only be about a 6" reach compared to the side focus knob, and there are plenty of options available with the front AO.

btw, cabelas sells a cabelas branded scope that is 3-12x40 with side focus for $160.00, i'm not sure what the build quality or optics are like though, don't be surprised if they're poor.

I was actually coming back to edit say it could be front AO, I'd prefer the side but granted front AO is ok.

Also a sunshade would help a lot. I always seem to be forced into shooting and having the sun shine directly onto the front lens of my scope :p

Mueller APV 4-14x40 w. AO is around $200-$250.00

I have one on my 223 bolt action rifle and really like it. I can see holes in paper at 200 yards.

Do any of the CGN dealers carry these?

I've checked on Cabelas, WSS, P&D, etc and still cant seem to find anyone who carries Mueller scopes.

There's White Falls sales here in Winnipeg and also Asimons on this site who sells them. I have no connection to either, but have two of the scopes. One on my varmint rifle and one on my CZ452 22LR. It comes with a nice sun shade as well.

I have a Bausch & Lomb 6-24x40 scope ... $400 shipped? Glass is clear, minor marks on tube. What is AO in plain english? Let me know Dr Ache ... or pm me your e-mail and I'll send you pictures.

AO stands for Adjustable Objective, meaning parallax adjusting

MSRP is a tick over your budget but most dealers sell for less than that anyway. See if Phil at P&D can set you up with a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14x40. He's got it on his site at $381 with side focus.

Just got a Vortex Crossfire for my varmit rifle. When I say just, I mean yesterday so I can't fully comment on how it performs quite yet. I was out testing it down the street (no it's not mounted but I probably looked like a peeping tom) and the glass looked very good. Does come with a sunshade. I did find the sunshade threading to be a bit rough but so far it looks to be well worth it. The AO is a front adjustment though. The lifetime warranty is a big plus too. From what I have read they are very good at honoring the warranty and it can transfer if you sell the scope. Definte plus IMO.
