Need to be a range member?

I believe you do not need to be a member of a range to purchases a restricted but CFO will give you a hard time if you are not a member or in the process of joining a range. You cannot shoot restricted any place but an approved range

If you're classified as a collector, you don't have to be a member.
If you build a range on your own property, and get it approved, then yes you can.
But in reality, post #2 is the best answer.

Rpal

I've just received my Restricted PAL. Do I need to be a member of a range to buy a restricted firearm? Can I only fire my restricted firearms at a range or can I shoot on my property?

Thanks

Membership in a club is definitely not required to purchase a restricted firearm. In Ontario, you can apply for Collector status, if you wish to go that route.

should know this if you have a RPAL.....
yes you need to be a member, no you cant shoot on your property, only at the range.

Not in Ontario.

- You CAN purchase and have in your possession at home any restricted firearm WITHOUT being a member of a CFO approved club.
- You only need to state that you are in the process of joining XYZ club (but not obligated to join that particular club if you change your mind) when you purchase your restricted firearm.
- You WILL need to be a member of a club AND owner of a restricted firearm in order to be issued a LTATT.

If you don't plan on shooting your restricted firearms, apply for collector status.

Other Provinces require you to be a member of a club before being allowed to bring home a restricted. I believe they can also get a LTATT when they join a club without having to go through the BS runaround in Ontario ie Club Safety course and 3-10wk wait for LTATT to be issued.

if you don't join a range or become a collector and just plan on keeping the pistol in a safe then it's very unlikely that they will renew your rpal when it comes around. you will have to show in some way that you are using your gun for the purposes stated on your application, either target shooting or collecting. if you could manage to get documentation each time you visit a range you don't belong to or competition that you have attended that might suffice, or not. unless you really live in the boonies and away from hunting spots it's very unlikely that you will get approved status to shoot it at home unless you make some major and expensive mods.
