A fellow that works for me has an 1895 he might be interested in parting with. I haven't seen the rifle yet but he says it was put away damp once and now has a fair amount of surface rust. Apparently the bore and wood are good and he says it functions fine. He doesn't know the age of the rifle as his father bought it used a number of years ago.

I don't know a whole lot about these rifles so what's a rough ballpark for one that needs refinishing? I'll try to get my hands on it for a closer look but I'd like to give him an idea of what to expect.

Is there anything else I should look for that might make it worth more or less?

check for cracks & check bore & trigger mech. very close. If it's more than 300$ i'ld let it pass. Others may think it is worth more. Reblue will be +- $200. Just a stab in dark at a unseen gun. (a pig in a poke)

thanks, I hear what you're saying about a stab in the dark but he's not sure what it's worth either. If I can give him a ball park he can decide if we should look into it further.

Marlin 1895

As a long time Marlin collector (50 plus rifles) I would be interested if it was made before 1906. Check the serial number and let me know. Is it a Rifle or Carbine? Depending on this information could be worth $500 plus plus. Don't refinish it yet until I can see some pictures or get some more information.
