I have what looks like a lead buildup in one of my Beretta chokes. The stuff is plated in there and I don't want to start scratching and gouging to get it out.

Is there some cleaner or oil that I can use to get it out without scratching the choke? Would Kroil or some kind of penetrating oil work??

Use a brass brush on the end of your cordless drill with only one extension. A 30 second spin should take it off.

It's not lead it's plastic from the wads. Soak the tube with WD40 for 20 minutes then have at er' with the brass brush or stainless steel tornado(works better).

Another good product is eezox premium gun care. spray some of that in the choke let it soak for a minute then use a bronze bore brush and it comes right out.and it has a nice smell to it too :).

Thanks to all for the good advice - I'll give the choke a cleaning this weekend - Happy to know that it's not lead in there:D

choke cleaner

Shooter's Choice and a couple of other manufacturers actually make a choke and bore cleaner............WD-40 is NOT a cleaner it is a lubricant. I started using this stuff on my Krieghoff competition gun last year after my uncle mentioned it too me. I couldn't believe how well it works!!! I used to use a cyclone brush with my drill to clean my barrels now I just spray the barrels, let it sit for about 10 minutes and then push the soft copper brush and the crud just slides out.

One suggestion for safety.........used this stuff outside and don't get any in your eyes or on your hands. Read the label.........it's scary nasty stuff. I even use it to clean the receiver when it get's really dirty.

Overall the best $10 cleaning product you will ever buy, hands down!!!!!

Absolutely correct WD-40 is a lubricant, nonetheless, it works extremely well at loosening plastic buildup in choke tubes and barrels. Costs less too for the purpose being discussed.

Even though it is a lubricant, it is not suited very well to be used so on firearms in that it can leave a sticky residue if left pooled internally. Not a good thing in your shotgun action.

Hate to break it to the above posters but WD-40 is NOT a lubricant, but a water displacement product (hence the WD moniker). It is great for removing sticky bumper stickers, getting the moisture out of your distributor cap, and even cleaning your shotgun bore. But as a lubricant, fugittaboutit.........

I've also used it at times, just ran out , in fact.
Works very well.
I also use Amzoil foaming engine cleaner.
Spray it in. let soak for ten or so, then give 'er with a brush on a cordless drill - works great!

Just a thought but this seems to be a non issue with Guns that do not have Choke Tubes. I have 4 Clay Target Guns Sans Choke tubes and have never had Plastic build up in any of them. I reload my own shells with quality Wads. Does this "build up' happen more with Factory shells or does it make a difference?

Dunno, but it may be that the chokes are made of different steel?
Ir maybe we just clean our fixed choke guns a little more?

I have seen it with fixed chokes also but not as bad. Using cheap wads or shooting factory promo loads it is a given.
Like you I reload and never see it with quality wads. Get some of the old orange WT-12's I think they were called, they should come with a wire brush for the build up they cause.
