Need Trail Boss load for 45-70

14.0 to 16.0 grs would be safe for actions as weak as the Springfield Trapdoor. Yours is a stronger action, but I'm not prepared to suggest going any higher.

Otherwise use published Alliant Green Dot or Hodgdon Titegroup loads that are deemed safe for your gun.

Trail Boss

Hodgdon Powders do not differentiate between the usual three classes of actions/firearms loads...Springfield...Marlin..Ruger #1 etc. for Trail Boss. They only provide one set of load data

Lyman 330 Gould PBase Teflon taped and at 350 gr.actual weight. NO fillers are used with this powder . Ruger #3... 22 inch Brl.

Started at 13.0 Grains and tested to 17.0 grains Trailboss.

13.0 Gr. TrailBoss .....1104..1083..1092 fps
14.0........................1117..1076..1128
15.0........................1187..1159..1151
16.0........................1228..1230..1220... Best load at 1.6 inch /100 yds
17.0........................1190..1200..1187 ..powder had peaked ..with less velocity noted and groups got much bigger.

I was able to get a 5 shot group, 1 1/2" X 1 1/2" at 100 yd, using my Uberti Hiwall clone, 15 gr. T.B. under a 350 gr. LRNFPBB bullet.
I found the lower charges did not perform as well.
I think some of accuracy issue has to do with the case capacity, i.e. how full the case is.
Before things went sideways at this ranch, I was planning on trying some loads using a filler to top up the case, as you do using BP.
It's still on my list of things to do.
I had called Hogdon and spoke to a techie who gave me a range of 14.0 to 16.0 grains (Max) Trail Boss using a 350 gr lead bullet and my rifle.
I'll be interested to see how the charge range will work topping up the charges with a filler to hold the powder in place.
