I'm a novice turkey hunter(my first year) and so far it's-Turkeys=1; Me=0.
I've got permission to hunt about 500 acres near Lucan,On. The farmers say "theres thousands of turkeys 'round here", I've seen turkey tracks, droppings, twice I saw a gobbler strutin his stuff(once after 7pm,and once he went into the bush 200 yds away and never came back) I call in the morning,I call mid morning, I call in the evening.....no one calls me back! This is frustrating(but I keep going back out.)

I usually dont get gobblers to answer me back. But they do come in. The trick is not to call very much. Your probably over calling and scaring them away, rookie move. I did it for lots of year until resently. Less is more in my books.

I am pretty close to you, Arva actually, if you need help, maybe we could hook up, I could do some calling for you, see if there is anything about. Let me know.

Are they Gobbling in the morning? They are here, like crazy, maybe there is no birds on your particular property.......just a thought.

Its the season, Seems the turkeys are working like this all over. Don't be frustrated and wait for another week. Seems it is early and this could cause the no answer problem. This year is far
different then most expected...

Keep putting your time in and get to know your area and pattern your turkey. The two toms I shot this year I never made a call and the only calls they made were in the strutting area or while following hens? As for calling sit in the bush all day and listen, I bet you will not hear another hen call, so do not call too much? You can always tell if its another hunter or a turkey calling in the woods?

Keep at it, and change things up until you find what works.
Turkey are not that hard to hunt. Find the birds, play until you find what works, and you will have your bird. IMO deer (big bucks) are way more challenging than are turkeys.

hello the best advice i can give is to listen for the birds in the morning even if thy are not talking much thy will goobel at least once on the roost .once you have heard them try to get close to them with out scaring them and call just enough to let them now were you are .it may take a wail but they should come looking for you .thy may come with out making a sound .the biggest hint i can give is to sit very still and keep a keen eye open best of luck

Yup what Adrian said. Quit calling. They heard you and didn't respond. Sit still and keep your eyes open. Gobbler don't seem to want to leave cover for some reason. Know when to hold 'em and know when to fold 'em goes for turkey calling. Wait and watch a few days then change calls and use it sparingly. SIT STILL and good luck;);)

thanks for all the input and advise guys (and gals) I'll be out early saturday to try my luck once again. Hopefully I'll fill my tag and have some pics to post for all to admire(maybe even envy, lol)

It is an odd season.
The toms are still with the hens.
Saw toms on Monday and this morning in different locations still romancing a few hens in the field.
Tough to call them in like that, when they've got hot hens in front of them and you're trying to lull them in over a couple of stiff hens on a stick.

The big tom on Monday looked at me and my set, looked at the four hens he was courting, and didn't even consider my calling.

Good news. I got my first Jake!!!! Went out Monday morning, got to the field I'm gonna hunt, get all my stuff out of the back of my suv, close the door and the f#@%ing car alarm starts to go off. Get it shut off after fumbling for my keys for 10 seconds with my gloves on and move to this tree I'm gonna use today. (Off to a flying start I say to myself) Well its dark, and I can't believe the new growth since last week when I was here; so I crash through the brush and set up at my tree. I move around way more than I should, casually drinking my timmie's, and here what I believe to be some clucks off to my right(with all the other birds making a racket it was hard to tell). These "clucks?" are getting closer I says to myself but I can't see anything yet. After about ten more minutes, WHOOOSH a turkey flies out a the tree not 30 yds in front of me. I pray that he comes my way, and he does!!!!! I'm sure he sees me, but I just play it cool now and move very slowly(I put my coffee down and pick up my gun at this point) Closer he? comes but I still can't tell if it's a male. Behind a tree he goes just to my left, I use this chance to move into shooting position still hoping for a beard to come out the other side of the tree. Head shows, beady eyes staring at me, and there it is, the tiniest beard you ever saw. He'll be out of position in about three more steps, but I don't have a clear shot just yet. One more step, head sticks up and clears some brush and BOOM> My first turkey goes down.(I didn't even finish my coffee yet!!!) Sorry to ramble on but my first bird got me a little excited; now I have to figure out how to clean him.(before the wife gets home):D I think I'm gonna be addicted now, lol. thanks for reading -td

Congratulation thedonald!!

You've broken the mould. It just keeps getting better from now!
Hope you enjoy that tasty treat!!

and here what I believe to be some clucks off to my right

A lot of times when we hunters are afield, we hear things... when you "think" you've "heard" something (ie deer grunt, turkey cluck etc) 9 times out of 10, it's exactly what you heard! ;)

Got him all cleaned up, those breasts are huge!(not the first time I've said that) Kept the beard and the tail. For all you measurement guys, beard-3.5 inches, spurs(more like nubs) .25 inches. Anyway, theres 6 more days of turkey season and I'm getting another tag. Just after I shot this bird, there was another jake just across the corn field, gobbling his fool head off. I'll see if i can take him before next Sunday. thanks again.-td

Did you breast him, or do the whole bird? If you breasted him, just watch the way you cook them. My buddy BBQ'd a breast and it came out dry as a popcorn fart!

I always pluck and clean mine, which is a pain in the ass and you get lice all over you. BUT on the brightside, it's a good 4-6 beer job. (May vary depending on size of bird and level of drunkeness)

;)
